... let their fingernails grow, and then paint them? in my entire student life, i always make it a point to never let my fingernails grow to the extent of letting it get pass my fingertips. i thought that's pretty neat and clean to look at. but then i noticed that some students let their fingernails grow and then later put paint on them.. i like to look at them though.. but is that appropriate? for a student? for workers, sure.. but for a student???

i paint my nails. but i don't let it grow too long, not pass my fingertips, like you. i find it difficult to write and draw if my fingernails are long, and with my course where we draw a lot, and paint and write, it's really a hassle having long nails. i do paint them though. but in pastels only. no one has scolded me before. i guess it's alright. besides, they just let our guys grow their hair long, and beard and all, looking so scruffy, i guess nobody would even notice my nails painted, lol.

yup. there are schools which aren't too strict about hair, fingernails, etc. but where i went to school before, we weren't allowed to have long painted fingernails. and for guys, they weren't allowed to have long hair. which is good actually. just like you, it's inappropriate, too in my course to have long fingernails. i studied pharmacy and we always do lots of stuffs in the laboratory. so, it's safer if our fingernails are short. anne

i agree, i guess pastel colors are alright, even pretty to look at. black and darker colors are a bit extreme on young hands.

I don't think the length of your fingernails have anything to with your student life. I doubt it even has anything to do with your work life. I mean unless you let your nails interfere with your work at school or you job what do your nails have to do with it? If you have fake nails, long nails, short nails, pink nails, blue nails or green nails I don't see how that would matter. I'd say professionalism in work may have something to do with color... but i definitely don't think it matters in school.

my friends with long fingernails usually find it hard to write because their palms get crescent scars (due to the long fingernails..).. :(

ok. i get your point. as long as you're comfortable with long nails or short nails / pink or black nails - doesn't really matter, right? what's your latest trend of fashion? does that include nails, too? i'm thinking of painting my fingernails pink - but i won't let them grow to the point where it'll be a nuisance to my day to day activities. thanks.

but that's still their choice. I just don't think it's innapropriate to have long or short nails. pink or black nails. real or fake nails. unless maybe you were a hand model. or a lawyer (black may not go over so well in court). you know? It's like hair color. it shouldn't matter.

I don't see anything wrong with students having long nails and polish. Actually it is more against certain workplace restrictions here than in schools.

recently, i find it cute, looking at fingernails which are painted pink or just simply polished. i want to paint my fingernails pink! i really think that the color looks nice on my fingernails. what color do you usually paint on your fingernails?

I think it shouldn't matter how long someone's nails are, or even what colour they paint them. Individuality is a great thing.. We aren't all Lemmings.. I don't think having nails would prevent someone from doing school work either.

it may not prevent someone from doing school work, but sometimes, it can be a real nuisance.. especially when one can't be too careful. but i guess it's okay to have long nails in school - as long as you're comfortable with it. i ain't. but i like to paint my nails pink because i really think it's a cute color. don't you think? cheers, dianne

I think its ok. I've grown my nails ever since I was 17 years until now. Its a total of 11 years. Opps, now you know how old I am. Nevertheless, my classmates and friends always ask me to cut my nails because I grow them too long. Its not I want to. But because I'm lazy to cut them and shape them. Its tiring work you know. THey never understand how I can type with long fingernails but I always show them. My nails are really strong. :D

good for you, then. as for me, i'll find it hard to type or write something if i let my fingernails grow too long. and i don't like it when i grow it too long because in the middle of the day, there's a great tendency that my nails will become dirty. and it's embarrassing. but since you're comfortable with long fingernails, i guess it's okay. thanks for your response, hello kitty! :)

I don't really see why it would be inappropriate for a student? I've never much liked painting my nails, but I've always grown them, because I like the look for myself. I think that nailpolish is perfectly acceptable for anyone who wishes to wear it =D

No, I don't think it looks informal at all. of course it depends on the school, but I have always attended public schools, so I've never really had much of a hassle with accessories, nails etc. Extremely long, bright red nails might be a bit much, but in general, a nice coat of nailpolish doesn't pose too much of a threat.

for some, they think yes. but on my personal point of view, no. it's just that students don't look neat with long painted fingernails. i don't know. maybe i just grew up in the philippines and most school do not let their students have long painted fingernails when going to school. i don't think it's just appropriate. anne

I never painted my nails when I was still in high school since it wasn't allowed in our school. I only started doing so when I reached college, being in the Fine Arts College it doesn't matter what color nails you have. I guess it is only proper to maintain a clean appearance as a student. No distracting elements whatsoever, besides I don't think it'll look good having elementary and high school students with nails all painted. The cleaner look will always be better.

yeah, in high school they were pretty strict with hair and nails, we were not allowed to color our nails either. ironically i think it was during those age that a lot of girls get drawn to colorful matter. now looking back, i'd have to agree with you, elementary and high school students look better without painted nails.

I don't know if it is inappropriate but I know of lots of students and women too who have their nails done and painted too. Most of them have the artificial ones you put onto and looks like you have claws LOL I for one don't like them too long as I can't type properly.

It isn't inappropriate but maybe unconfortable when you write. Thank God we don't have rules about dressing, hair or nails in our school so I really don't think it isn't appropriate, well of course if you go to school half dressed that is inappropriate but long fingernails maybe well cured and painted it's ok and nice to look.

I'm a student and I *love* growing out my fingers. At the moment, most are about 1/3 of an inch past the tip of my fingers. I don't paint them, however, as it just takes too long and I consider it a waste of time. But to me, long fingernails are sexy. I enjoy them. And unless we're talking about gym class, it doesn't hurt a student's ability to perform in school at all, unless they're messing with their nails during class, which I don't do. So I guess I think it's alright.

i'm pretty much amused by your fond of growing out your fingernails and considering it as fashion. well, since you're not bothered at all with that, i guess it's okay in your case then. thanks for the response. :)

I guess long, polished fingernails does not affect your being a student. Appropriateness maybe questioned to what color of nail polish you used on your fingernails. When I was a student, I used to let my fingernails grow and paint them blue (note: 3 coats) It really depends on a person how she goes about with it. There are schools that prohibit their students to put on nail polish, which I cannot reckon why. So just follow rules hehe..

you know, it really depends. if you grow them and do not maintain them the proper way, then they can only be a residence for the ferocious bacteria and germs. and the fact that they are long, anything small can get inside and be stored under your nails. on the other hand, if you keep them short and clean cut all the times, then they will look more hygienic and neat. but that's of course if you maintain it as that.in other words, it depends on how you take care of them, be they long or short-cut.
