There is a beautiful and convincing explanation given by the Chinese Legend... Thumb represents your Parents Second (Index) finger represents your Siblings Middle finger represents your-Self Fourth (Ring) finger represents your Life Partner & the Last (Little) finger represents your children First, open your palms (face to face), bend the middle fingers and hold them together - back to back Second, open and hold the remaining three fingers and the thumb - tip to tip (As shown in the figure): Now, try to separate your thumbs (representing the parents)..., they will open, because your parents are not destined to live with you lifelong, and have to leave you sooner or later. Please join your thumbs as before and separate your Index fingers (representing siblings)... ., they will also open, because your brothers and sisters will have their own families and will have to lead their own separate lives. Now join the Index fingers and separate your Little fingers (representing your children)... ., they will open too, because the children also will get married and settle down on their own some day. Finally, join your Little fingers, and try to separate your Ring fingers (representing your spouse). You will be surprised to see that you just CANNOT....., because Husband & Wife have to remain together all their lives - through thick and thin!! Please try this out... ISN'T THIS A LOVELY THEORY?

The vein in the fourth finger on your left hand does lead directly to your heart - that is true.

Hi Bluishrose that was really wonderful and thank you for sharing it with us :) i agree its a lovely theory and nice way of knowing we have our loved ones at the tip of our finger LOL and by the way there is another theory down in India where its believed each of our fingers a point that reperesents an internal organ and the ring finger represents the heart so you wear the ring of your loved one on the ring finger :) ...hey accupuncture you should be fimiliar with it.....:)

that's a clever explanation there! i tried did what was told in your discussion. and you're right. i just can't separate my fourth fingers! that's so difficult to do and even impossible. i also heard that only the fourth finger has a vein which is directly connected to our hearts. that's why the engagement and wedding rings are worn on our fourth finger. anne

That's a nice theory about fingers' role. However, I tried what you had told but I had separated both of my 4th finger or ring finger although not as widely open as the other fingers. What I know is that the fourth finger has the veins connected to our heart, and it is the heart which is involve in our love relationships, that is why the wedding ring or engagement ring is worn on the 4th finger.

It all has to do with symbolism. Four is the heaven number, thus the forth finger.

It is a lovely story, I like it, however the reason that the fourth finger on the left hand was chosen is because that is the only finger that has a vein that leads directly to your heart!

That was cute. Hehehe.. I was just a little shocked when you said you wear your wedding ring on your pinky finger. I didn't know that, because I wear my ring (not wedding ring) in my pinky finger for style. =) Whew. Anyways, thanks for the thought. =)

I didnt quite understand at first. Maybe I read too quick. But now I do and its true. I cant seperate the ring finger myself. That is a nice theory of Chinese. I am Chinese myself but I guess I never read about this one, but I will keep it as an input. But one thing I wonder, if husband and wife have to remain together all their lifes but I can see they live separately or divorced.... Is that mean that they dont belong to each other?

Such a lovely representation.. well, I tried it and I was able to separate my ring fingers a little (note: with a little force applied on the thumb). Does this mean that my parents would press me to be separated with my husband or would I press my parents to let me be separated with my husband? LOL! Now, about the ring finger, everybody had been saying there's a vein on the left ring finger that connects directly to the heart..don't know if its true. Does it really matter in which finger the wedding ring should be?

Maybe for some people it doesnt matter where the wedding ring is put on but for me it matters i want it place on the wedding finger to show to people that im married. Because if its placeon the others the meaning would be different right?!

ok...and also to "preserve" the sanctity of you being married, wedding ring should be placed on your ring finger =)

The reason, so I have heard, why the wedding ring is worn on the left index finger, I believe it's called, is because that finger has the vein that leads directly to the heart.

I knew it. Some days ago, my friend told me, only the forth finger couldn't separate! It means two hearts never to separated!

I think thee was an old legend that the left hand ring finger held a nerve that ran from the finger to the heart, hense the tradition of putting rings on the fourth finger of the left hand. Even after it was proven not to be true, the tradition of the ring finger stuck.
