Silence

Our power went off last night, at about 9:30 p.m. My side of the street, the opposite side, and the side behind them were all affected. I'm guessing that about 100 homes lost their power last night. It was still really warm out, so I went outside to sit on the porch. It was completely dark by this time. It was so quiet. There was absolutely no noise. The power was out for about 3 hours. When my husband and I went to bed, we couldn't sleep. There was no background noise to lull us to sleep. Isn't it amazing how loud the quiet can be, if you're not used to it? We laid there for over an hour before the power came on, just a little after midnight. I was then able to turn on the t.v. and got to sleep before 45 minutes was up. I find that I like to have noise around me constantly. I can't stand it when it is completely silent. What about you? Do you like it loud, quiet, or a good mix between the 2?

Me too. I think it's because I'm so accustomed to noise. I have my children, the t.v., the radio, my dogs, a bird, etc. It seems like time stops when all of the power goes off. I do not like to be in the total darkness either. It scares me very, very much.

I think it depends on what you are accustomed to. Someone in the heart of the city would have trouble going to sleep in a country home in the middle of nowhere. Just like someone from the country would probably have problems in the middle of New York City.

You're exactly right. I used to live next to a set of train tracks. My grandpa, who is my hero, worked for the rail road when he was alive. He even threw us candy from the back of the caboose, way back when they still used them. I LOVE to hear a train. Keep in mind I don't like to wait for them when I'm trying to get somewhere, but I love to hear them. It is calming to me. Most people would say that they would hate to live next to a train track, that it would be too noisy. For me it would bring back a few good memories.

we live in a pretty small town, so its mostly quiet to begin with. i like a good mix between the 2 i guess. with 2 small kids its nice sometimes to have quiet, although it doesn't happen very often lol. sometimes in the evenings my husband and i try to sneak outside and sit on the porch together and relax.

I love the silence of deep meditation where I can "listen" to myself. I can understand the fear of silence especially in meditation as it means that the ego "throne" over the mind is being challenged. Once this is fully recognised and confronted, the fear of silence will evaporate.. :-)

My power went out for two hours the third of july. I quickly found a battery operated radio, a lantern and other stuff to keep me busy or I would have went nuts. I do not like total silence. I am used to noise too, but quiet is good, it doesn't have to be loud.

Unfortunately, we don't have a battery operated radio. I guess I could have went and sat in the car, LOL!! It was so weird. And I was at the end of a great book too. I sat there with a flash light and read until I was done. Couldn't help it. I just like a bit of background noise, I don't think it has to be real loud either.

I cannot sleep with any type of noise. If it is not 100% silent I can't get to sleep. I don't understand this though. When I was younger I couldn't go to sleep unless I had my radio playing music. I guess as you get older things change.
