Eating Watermelons

Tonight we cut open and ate a huge watermelon, grown here in Arkansas. It was so sweet and the meat was so red and vibrant in color.
I was always taught to tell if a watermelon is ripe by thumping it with your knuckles softly...if it sounds hollow then it is ripe.
The kids enjoyed eating it very much. I cut the rind off and cube it and put it on paper plates...then let them take it outside...
I remember, we often took a watermelon to the river with us and held it in the water in a fishing net with a couple of big rocks on the handle to keep it in place. It always made the watermelon so cold...this is one of my fondest memories of my youth...
So does your family eat watermelons? What tricks does your family use to keep it cold during picnics or other gatherings?

I love Water Melons but I find that they are just not the same anymore from the Supermarkets
I still get them occasionally, but it is not very often anymore that you can get so sweet
We used to take Cooler Bags with us and everything stayed Cool in there
Hugs to you

I love watermelon. I do the same I take the rind off and cube it and put it in the refrigerator, that's the way my children and husband eat more watermelon, when it's cold. I am craving for a watermelon!

It's been a long time since I last had watermelon. Mostly we would just refridgerate it to keep it nice and cold. I love them when they are sweet. Ok now I am getting hungry with all your discussions on food LOL
