MILWAUKEE (UPI) -- A lawyer for a Milwaukee woman convicted of locking her son in his room with a bucket for a toilet during football games suggested a poetic punishment.
Melanie Hardrath and Scott Scherer were found guilty of repeatedly locking Hardrath's young son in his room with nothing but a bucket for his natural needs while they watched Green Bay Packers games at the Potawatomi Bingo Casino, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Tuesday.
"What do you do?" Hardrath's defense attorney, Richard Johnson, asked Judge Jeffrey Wagner. "Maybe this coming football season, lock them in a room with a bucket and make them watch (Chicago) Bears games."
Instead, the couple faces several months in jail for the offense.
Investigators found the two could easily have afforded a babysitter. Their home was stocked with nearly $1 million worth of Packers memorabilia.

This is insane! the poor boy must feel worthless..to be locked away while his parents watch a FOOTBALL GAME?!! come on! and then the kicker at the end there...the home had nearly $1 MILLION worth of Memorabilia?! OMG! i have known a couple of "die hard" football fans..but a million dollars worth? and then not be willing to fork over the $50 (MAX!) for a babysitter?
another great example of crappy parents with their priorities Seriously messed up!
like a few other ppl have mentioned..why isnt there some kind of test and license requirment to have kids? and a follow up RENEWAL test for that license every couple of years?!
the world would be a better place if there was such a thing!

Very sad story. I feel sorry for the child. I do hope the parents get what is coming to them.
As for the whole license thing, well that wouldn't do much of anything and I doubt it will ever happen.
A license doesn't make things better. Why would it? Just look at people with a driver license... does it solve problems? No, we still have crazy drivers. And I'm sure even with a parenting license we will have the bad parents.

that is sad but i have seen and heard worse i hate to say. anybody can have a kid that is the sad part. you are right maybe a test would be an idea. allt hat stuff and couldnt let the kid have a sitter. or even take him and leave him in a hotel room. i mean that would of been better. not ideal but better. some people are really over the top with sports. i mean that was just horriable. the parents need more then just jail time i think

What a couple of football obsessed freaks those two people are!!!! When a hobby or an interest becomes an obsession such as this one did, it becomes dangerous. I can't believe those two could do that. How could anyone do that to anyone? That's sick! They're sick!!!!! I hope they get LIFE!
