Gaia is the name of a greek goddess, and a translation of her name would be something like "Grandmother Earth" though some claim it would be more like "Mother Earth". Find a native Greek speaker to tell you which perhaps? More recently, there has been what is called the Gaia theory, which is kind of the idea of the earth as a single living organism, and all life on earth as part of it. They used the name of a Greek earth Goddess for this theory on purpose.
