A Dog Story with a Happy Ending

I had to share this story I saw this morning. I was so happy to see a story showing kindness to an animal after all the horrors we have heard and seen about that SOB Vick and and his cruelty by participating in dog fighting. MY LITTLE OLD MAN While driving down a busy street this past January, Nadine Guyaux and her husband spotted a fuzzy black Pomeranian trying to cross. “Cars were honking to get him back onto the sidewalk,” recalls Nadine, “but he had this air about him as though he was out strolling in the park!” When Nadine pulled over, the pooch turned around and walked right up to her. The couple took him to the veterinarian, where they learned that the approximately 13-year-old dog had poor eyesight and bad arthritis in his rear legs. The vet also determined that the Pomeranian was deaf, which explained why he wasn’t fazed by the honking on the street. “What a handful we had,” says Nadine. “An old, deaf, blind little guy who fell a lot from his knees giving out.” Friends advised the couple to put the dog to sleep, but that was completely out of the question. “He had something about him that made us start to secretly hope his owner wouldn’t be found,” Nadine admits. She did try calling the phone numbers listed on the dog’s tag—but they had been disconnected. The Guyaux family named the foundling Max, and sat back and watched as his personality emerged. “He’s the funniest little guy ever,” says Nadine. “Because he can’t hear, he stomps his front feet to get our attention when he wants to play?which is all the time. The cats hiss and growl at him, but since he can’t hear, it’s fine by him.” “I call him my little old man,” Nadine says lovingly. “Max has such a gentle soul, and even though I can tell he’s had a long, hard life, he’s managed to keep his sweetness and innocence. He’s brought so much joy into our lives, we couldn’t imagine living without him.” http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=media_newsalert072707#2 Photo: Max - A Happy Ending

Oh that is so sweet. As long as he isn't in pain, and it doesn't appear he is, I don't blame them at all. My sister in law has a 14 year old pug. That is an extreme age for this type of breed. Well he can no longer bark, hear and is lossing some of his eye site. Everyone keeps telling her to put him to sleep. I disagree, he has problems, but he is still a happy dog in no pain. Why kill him? She has no intentions of doing that and I fully support her.

I certainly agree with your sister. I have had old dogs who have have led happy lives even with the aging aches and pains.

I agree too. If the dog can eat, drink, do wees & poos, & any pain can be managed well, why put him down? We don't put people down with many more problems than this.

I thought you did not like pet stories. Now it turns out you are just an old softie. Have a nice day and may the god of your choice bless you.

Thank you for this heartwarming thread. I was also outraged by the Vick thing and I needed to read this one. I really appreciate celebrities with a history of animal activism these days. Betty White and Bob Barker are my new heroes and I just wish they would give their efforts ,which span a lifetime, half of the publicity they are giving the dog fight scandal. I'm going to be very upset if that arrogant creature gets off scot free on this one.

That is also my feelings. I have already signed one petition to Nike to stop using him and paying him the big bucks. The other was to the NFL.

This is a good one. If only there were more people who cared about animals this way the world would be a happier place. People just assum that when they see an animal on the streets that it doesn't have a home and just drive right on by, well if I assum it's homeless I stop and see about it. Maybe that is why I have four strays now but I can't immagine my life with out them.

What a great story, I'm glad Max found good home. I think every animal has a personality if you let them. I know my cat sure does...lol.

I have had over the years 18 dogs and many many cats Each one one them had a distinct personality all of its own. Right now I have a dainty, prissy one, a real cool dude who the perfect gentleman and a greedy, needy one (she has an exuse as she was abused)

There is a manuel for all soon to be pets. Chapter one, abuse. Be sure to emphasize to your new dumb human owner how badly you have been abused in the past. and how the new dumb human owner is going to have to bend over backwards to make up for it. You must carefully guide them to the goody bowl, thier favorite chair and the g spot on thier pillow. If they baulk, whine and pee on the floor and tremble. It works every time.

Thanks for the sweet story. Max reminds me of our dog, Charlie. He is part Pomeranian and part cocker spaniel. Someone dropped him off and he turned up at our house. He had loads of ticks, fleas, and heartworms. We got him treated and he is so affectionate and a beautiful dog.

This is a beautiful story. I love to hear of loving people who take on animals with problems. We don't all want a young puupy or kitten, cute though they may be. The poor dog must have been dumped, once the owners couldn't be bothered with his medical problems anymore. I would prefer to dump the pwners. Don't people realise there is a strong connection between people who are cruel to animals, & bullying & antisocial behaviour? We had an incident late yesterday with my neighbours dog. Although my neighbour lovces pets, she has a tendancy to get dogs that are not suitable together. In this case, she purchased a third dog (staffy, bull terrier puppy), & already had one of that breed (puppy too), polus an elderly terrier. The puppies who are already much larger than the terrir, attscked the latter visciously. My neighbour wasn't home, so myself & step son raced next door to rescue her. She had tred to escape under the metal gates, & in her panic weas stuck. The bulldog cross was attacking her. As my step son raced in & trioecd to seperate the dogs, I trioed getting the old dog from under thge gate. In the meantime another from opposite raced across in a terrible panic. We got the old dog out & shut the bulldogs in. The old dog was belleding around the eye & in a terrible state. During the 5 to 10 minutes we spent caring for the old dog, my neighbour came home. She was taken to the vet. No stitches, but quite a few nasty bite wounds. Her eye is red & turning black.I went next door later to check up on her. The poor thing was lying on my neighbours bed, zonked out with pain killers. It is against the law to have three dogs.

It is unusual to see a happy tale. But this one had it's sadness as well. There will always be more furry friends in need of good homes, a good feed and some love and warmth than those who are loved and cared for. It saddens me because they cannot speak for themselves and if their owner doesn't look after them and care for them they have little chance of survival. Bless these folk and others like them who rescue animals in need.

That is a good story. I had a lizard that was blind run to me after I saved it from crows lol. He couldn't see out of either of his eyes, but I was yelling at the birds and when they flew away he ran up to me, and then he laid in my lap while I drove home =P I still have him, and now I know one of his eyes is still intact! So that's good.

I think this is a great story! You are right, we hear too many horrible stories about how owners and people treat their poor dogs, it is nice to see such a happy ending! I am glad that the poor little guy was saved by the Guyaux couple! He deserves some kindness in the latter part of his life! Thanks for sharing this!
