I've wondered what this saying really means. Am I saying it correctly? How would you use it in a discussion?

To me, it means that we can change reality: our experiences, reactions, etc using willpower and attitudes, if we can't just change it outright. It's such a double-edged sword though. On the positive side, you can cope with pain, loss, and fear in order to continue living, get help, succeed, etc. On the negative side, if you believe something adverse to be true, it could become true. You can have real physical pain from the mind. Negative attitudes can not only make life hell, but they can also bring physical pain.

To me, it means that you can make up your mind that you can do something or you can make up your mind that you can not do something. You can make up your mind that something will work or you can make up your mind that something will not work. Whichever way you make up your mind, that's what is going to happen. I believe in the power of suggestion. It has been proven in many scientific studies that placebos, pills or medications made of nothing but sugar or inert substances, can actually effect illnesses and symptoms of illnesses. If you really believe - with your full mind and heart - you can do amazing things. I do think there are limitations. But I believe the power of the mind is staggering and has yet to be fully understood.
