I always wanted a Germen Shepard puppy. So on one of my birthdays my husband found an ad in the paper for Shepard puppies. And so we took the family to go pick out a puppy for me. Of course I picked the runt, he was so tiny and adorable. He had cute floppy ears, he was black and tan, and the cutest little face. We already had another dog at home and his name was Barney after the purple dinosaur on tv, because that was the only name that my youngest daughter could say when we got him for the kids about six months earlier. Barney was a boarder collie mix, he was black and white and very hairy, as a matter of fact he looked like a tiny hair ball when my son and husband brought him home. Now it was time to have a family vote on a name for the new puppy. I always wanted a Germen Shepard puppy with the name Major Lee from a childhood friends dog that was a very well trained and protective Shepard. I now know that there will never be 2 alike dogs in one life time. But Major Lee turned out to be a very special part of our family anyway. My son taught him to play frisbee and he was good at it. He could do back flips and everything with that frisbee. He also loved to play fetch. He would play either ball or frisbee until his tongue would be on the ground and you would have to force him to get a drink. We even had neighborhood kids come over to play frisbee or ball with him, he was a very popular animal in our neighborhood. Major Lee was also a great family protector. The kids were very proud of him, because everyone called him a police dog. And so the family now had a very special part of our family and that was Major Lee. But as happens with most large dogs his hips started to get bad. There were times when he would drag his hind legs in stead of standing on them and walking. He was about 11 years old when his hips started acting up. We tried all kinds of the vets ideas but in the long run I didn't want him to suffer. He had a pretty long life for a larger dog, so I made the decision to put him down. This was one of the hardest things I ever had to do, I mean it is like loosing a close family friend. I just could not see him suffering any more. He was part of the family and we still talk about him and his frisbee to this day. Major Lee was a great friend and family protector and we miss him very much.

I am so sorry to hear about your dog Major Lee. It must be hard to deal with. When my puppy Honey got killed, I feel a terrible emptiness for a long time. I didn't want any other dog for years. It is sad. Your children must be devasted. However, remind them how great a dog he was and all that beautiful memories of him. He lives in your heart and mind always since he was so special to you all.
