Self service or real customer service?

When you are out shopping do you prefer to use the self scanners or do you prefer to go through a line with a real person to ring up your stuff?
For me it depends on the mood I'm in. Sometimes when I go to the store I'm in a hurry and just want to get in and out. I don't want to have to talk to anyone. I just want to get what I need, pay for it and go home. But there are other days when it doesn't bother me to actually have a cashier. Sometimes it's refreshing to see a friendly face and have a little chit chat.

I like the self scanners except for when they screw up. I've had trouble with the machine not scanning properly, and having to start all over, or the trouble light will go on, and a cashier will have to come and reset something. Sometimes it takes longer to use the scanners than to go to a cashier.

there are not a lot of self-serve check-outs in australia yet... so far, i only see it in certain K-mart stores... so i still go to the cashiers most of the time...

For me is according to how many items I am buying. When I do my weekly shopping I go thought the checkout line but if it is just a quick stop for a couple of things then I use the self scanner

I have not come acrossa self scanners. I think it would be nice if it is available. We can avoid the long queue at times.

I always use the customer service lanes just because the self service lines have taken away a job for someone. I work in a retail / grocery store that just replaced half of the customer lanes to self service and 36 young men and women lost their jobs because of it. They were all baggers and had families to support. I felt so bad for them. We also lost 5 managers and all but one person in the cash office. All because of the self service lanes. hugs

I usually just go to whichever line is shorter. Actually up here, there aren't any self scanners in most of the stores I go to, so I only use them when I'm back home. But because my son hates to be sitting in the cart without it moving, we really just go to the shortest line no matter where we are (unless of course we have too many items, and the shortest line is an express one). I talk to the cashiers if they are friendly, even if I'm not really in the mood. Of course, usually if I'm not in the mood, it's because my son is crying and/or screaming, so them no one tries to talk to me anyway.
