What do you do about noise at night?

About 3 o'clock in the morning, there was a lot of shouting going on outside somewhere. I could hear this even through our double-glazing windows, so what it was like for those without double glazing I do not know. There was two people in an argument somewhere where I could not see, but both were screaming at the tops of their voices. I thought I could call the police who may come (eventually) and move them on, but I thought by the time they come, the people will be gone. Living in the city, it is never wise to confront strangers, a few have been stabbed. This noise has happened twice in the last month. It is a fairly recent occurrence. Have you ever experienced this sort of disturbance? And how did you handle it?

I have indeed had this kind of disturbance, the voice shouting for help woke me up and I discovered it was coming through the wall from the woman next door, further noises revealed that her husband was severely beating her. I went round and saw him with his hands round her throat and she was trying to shout through an open window. I immediately went home and called the police. We lived in a very rural area with only five houses in our row, yet I was the only one who called the police, I decided that I couldn't care less what he thought of me the next day as I had previously had a friend who's husband had done the same thing. The woman had come to stay with me and I didn't inform the police of the goings on. When she went home, he murdered her. So there was no way I was not going to do something about the man beating his wife that night. In the end the police came and it turns out he was beating her severely. Sometimes you have to be really brave. It's not an experience I would like to repeat, but I would If I had to.

What an experience to have on more than one occasion too! It is sickening to witness such a thing. I witnessed this form of violence when I was 16. I was working with this band as a musician and went early to our band-leader's house for him to take me to the venue that night. When we got inside his wife started shouting at him because he hadn't told her he was working that night. She's shouting from the kitchen - I didn't know what to do with myself with embarrassment, and he's just talking to me as if nothing was going on. Suddenly he shot out of his chair, into the kitchen, slammed the door and I heard screams and a lot of banging about. I just went out to the phone box (no mobiles in those days - and strangely, I didn't want to use their phone). I called the police who took him away. Her face was a mess, but she wouldn't go to hospital. A neighbour then came in and called the ambulance and I felt relieved to make my escape. But I lost my job..

We live along the highway. I live here since birth so i am fond of all the noises going on at night and i don't care about them. WHen i feel like i want to sleep,i just sleep. And fortunately, i could..hehe. THere are also some night bars nearby and i could hear the singers voices, some are quite horrific. But i can't do anything. There are also some fights and everything. Sometimes they are chasing each others with knives. They are very frightening.

Thank God I live in a quite neighbourhood. However if such an occurrence happens I will not be the first person to jump and intrude between the two parties. I will phone the local police to handle the situation. I am not trained to handle such situation and I might get hurt.

Thanks for responding. Since this post I have moved to a very quiet neighbourhood in a country village. It is soooo different to being in the city where I have lived most of my life. At night you can hear a pin drop and the only noise I have heard since moving here was a firework display that lasted about 20 minutes on New Years Eve. But even that noise, being so far away, disappeared completely when I closed the window. You are very wise not to confront unknown people over these issues. _Derek

Hello Derek. I have experienced this sort of disturbance for a few times. There were some nights when I heard some people quarreling from somewhere a little bit far from my apartment windows. As it was quiet at night, their noise could be heard and it was very rude of them to make so loud noise as to disturb the others who were sleeping. I have never done anything to stop them because it will only cause some more trouble if I yell at them to stop it. I prefer to keep silent though in this situation unless it is someone that I know.

Thank you for responding Williamjisir. Yes it is wise not to stir up trouble with people who obviously have no respect for the peace and quiet of others. It's a sad fact that this sort of thing is happening in the world though... - Derek

I confronted my neighbor and told them i wanted them to stop cursing because i have three children and it isn't fair they have to put up with this stuff. They listened for a while, but then went right back to fighting.

Thank you for responding. I guess that there are many noisy people out there who will just never understand how much stress they are causing to others who have to listen to them. - Derek

The only thing that I use to hear when I lived in the country was crickets and dogs barking at night. Now I live in the suburbs and every now and then I will hear a car pass by but once I'm sleep I don't hear a thing. The only time that I hear loud talking is when in the daytime when I go outside. It's this lady who lives not too far from me who talks really loud on the telephone. It does not bother me. Everyone knows her business we can't help but hear it. Anyway if I were disturbed by a noise I would call the police and let them handle it.

Thanks for your response. The problem is in UK at the moment is that when there is excessive noise, nobody seems to do anything about it. But I guess slowly people are growing acclimatised to it.

I often hear a loud music from outside or just yelling or like somebody is snaping the door.Sometimes I just wonder what people are doing up so late and so loud.I like to stay up long, while I am the most creative thorugh the night, but it is disturbing all that noise.I am often scared and have to say I don't know how to handle it.I would be to scared go outside in the night and confront someone.

Thank you for the response. I guess that as we become more and more populated, we are going to get more noisy. I think it is wise that if you can put up with it, don't confront people who are making the noise - they could be drunk and most people are very unreasonable when drunk. :-)
