Ipod or MP3

Should I get an Ipod or a MP3 player? I really don't understand the difference, or what each one does for that fact. I am looking to replace my cd headset and think that one of these will be better when riding my mower, but which one. Is an MP3 player just the same thing as a cd player except the cd's are smaller? Does either of these record on a hard drive instead of a disc? I still can't figure out how they work. Where does the music come from? Do you pay to download it from the internet onto a hard drive on the player?
