What's most important to you....?

When preparing for a vacation. Are there different preparations if you are flying rather than driving somewhere? What are some things you do (or pack) no matter where/how far you are going? How long does it take you to prepare to go on a big trip? Does it make a difference if your children are involved or not? I often forget to pack at least one item I should have brought... Are you like this? If not, how do you remember all you need to do and pack? Happy travels this Summer :)

Sorry weemam that I did not catch my space bar blunder! My space bar does not always seem to work properly, I think I may need a new keyboard. xxx It should read, "I realize why you don't travel often..."

lol Well since we go by car the most important thing is finding enough room to fit everything in the car and leave space for the kids! We usually take too much stuff rather than not enough so we do alright! We usually manage to sort it all out the day before and encourage the kids to help pack their own things! xxx

I wish I was like that! I generally pack too much also but the last time we went to the farm to see my parents I did not factor in that it might be cold or rain. I had to buy my son some clothing and rubber boots and borrow some of my Mom's clothing... I felt so stupid not to have thought of those things!

Will be traveling to a flea market and swap meet at the end of August. I will pack to sustain us for 5 days. I have to have the cots and bedding. I have solar shower and camp kitchen ready. The utensils and eating ware also. The carport for staying in and having the wares displayed. We need our toiletries and our few extras. That covers us and we have done this for a few years. Also once my land is sold I am traveling out west to visit with margieannert and her prayer warriors to thank them for all their help since the fire took everything we owned in April. For that trip it will be clothing for the weekend and I am considering shipping my toiletries and any jewelry ahead. Since the airlines are so funny now. Will were slip on and off shoes and be prepared to be searched if need be. Want to carry only a carry on bag and be done with it. Barring shipping things... I will carry money to buy the things we need when we get there. No problem shipping things home for sure. Flying is definitely different and more difficult now. Good thing that I don't normally travel our of the state for anything.

Going to a Flea Market for five days would certainly require different packing than other trips. I agree that flying is more complicated these days...My husband and I are going to Cuba in a week and I am glad my husband is going to be with me while I go through customs as I have never done this before. I wish we could ship items but that is not an option when you are staying at a resort...Everything will have to be packed strategically and taken with us in carry ons as well as checked luggage.

In order not to forget anything, I type up a list of all the things we HAVE to take with us, like medications. I type out what the medicine is, who it is for and all the prescription information and doctor information just in case we need to get a refill. I never bother with toothbrushes, toothpaste and stuff like that. I buy those when we get there and toss them when we leave. Same with shampoo and soap and things like that. I do make an inventory of all the clothing we are taking. This gives me a check list for the return trip. It keeps us from losing anything. I also print out inventory lists for each suitcase and tape them to the inside of the cases. I also limit everything to one suitcase per person. If we buy clothing while on vacation, we donate the clothes we brought with us. Basically the rule is, if it doesn't fit into your suitcase, it doesn't go or come back with us. The only exception to this rule is my purse, my son's nuebulizer and my son's dinosaur that he sleeps with.

I always bring with me the things I need to bring every time I travel. I always packed light, meaning as much as possible I only carry things that I really need. A week before I travel I already check if the things that I would be needing are ready. 2 days before I go I already forecast what will I do from day 1 up to the end of my travel, I arranged it, sort it and packed it. I project as if I'm already traveling from day 1 up to the end of my vacation. I put my shirts, under wares, socks, shorts, pants in one column for day 1 another column for day 2,3,4. Then I sort my things and packed it.

There are some items they do not allow for you to carry on. You have to pack them in the suitcase that goes into the baggage department. You need clothes, toiletries clothes for the kids. Some food items cannot be taken to another country. You need your passport. What you do if you forget is to make a list and check off each item. For instance, you need your passports, you need your medicine plus a statement from your doctor, you need clothes and enough underwear in case you are not staying with relatives, if you are taking something breakable, wrap it carefully and put it in a box with enough foam or something that will keep it from breaking. They really throw the luggage around or else carry it on with you. The bags have to fit under the seat. If you drive, it is easier. You can take anything you want. But you really need a list and we usually get things ready the night before.

Hi heavenschild, Although I haven't travelled a great distance, or by plane, in many years, I do have a fair bit of experience along these lines. Having said this, I also realize that air travel has changed drastically, and I'm not even sure if I'd know the current do's and don'ts. The tips from willowlady for air travel are very good, and the slip on shoes are something I wouldn't have thought of, but a great idea. I think you can still bring certain toiletries, in the carry on luggage, but only some, and so hopefully you have a travel agent's list to help with this. I remember one time quite a number of years ago, I was travelling (somewhere) with my sister, and when she walked through the metal detector area, she was stopped, and searched with the wand that they use. She was very embarrassed, and it turned out to be that she was wearing a belt with a metal buckle, that was hidden from view. For really big trips I'd always make up a list of everything, from things to take to details to look after beforehand etc. I'd check things off as they were packed, or the item was completed. I'm very happy for you and your husband, as this sounds like a wonderful trip to me. Have a great time, and we'll look forward to hearing all about it here, when you're back.:)

When preparing for a vacation there are several things to consider. If you are flying to a destination, how long are you going to be there? Remember parking your car at the flight terminal costs money, so get someone to drop you off if possible. You also need to think about travel arrangements once you arrive at your destination. Do you need a rental car? Can you take a taxi, bus, or transit unit? Do you even need transportation or does your destination have everything you need. How much to pack? Make a list for each day you are there and for each thing you plan to do. Pack for your vacation activities. Do you need something comfortable to wear to hike in? Something elegant for dinner? Something casual or a bathing suit for the beach or amusement park. Making a list and setting outfits together from top to bottom will help you not to forget things. Give yourself plenty of time to arrange all activities and to pack. Never rush, you will forget something important. Dont forget to bring shoes, belts, accessories, phone chargers, batteries. Have a great time.

We are going to an all inclusive resort so a bus will be there to pick us up at the airport at that end. We have arranged rides both ways at this end. Thanks so much for your tips. It will be my Husband's and My fifth anniversary and we have never been outside the country so we are really looking forward to this. We leave on Sunday and look forward to spending a wonderful week together on the beach.

Thanks jerrybearjr. My husband and I feel the same way when we travel. That is one reason why we prefer Bed and Breakfasts to Hotel Rooms. This will be my first time out of my own country so it is getting exciting!! Sunday is so close now :)

Well have a wonderful time. An all inclusive resort is the way to go, in my opinion. I have been to several and it is always nice to find a place that will house, feed, and entertain you.
