You are reading a book. You came across something you find interesting. It is something you like to take note or highlight in case you needed it for reference. How do you highlight it?
Do you mark it with a highlighter, pen or pencil or whatever you can find? Or do you just fold the corners of the page? Or are you the more adventurous type - tear the page off and file it separately? lol.
Highlighters..... do you use it? How?

I would never write on a book nor turn a page down , I like to keep my books in good condition , My husband is the very same , when we pass books on to friends they are like new , If I have to make a note of something ( I do this a lot ) I write it on a piece of paper and then kep it safe untill I use it , sometimes I store it on the PC xx

I have a few books (mainly poetry ones) where I have highlighted the lines that I loved best. When I am feeling down, I can flip through the book and find those pieces right away, and it makes me smile to know that whoever owns the book next will see them. When I receive a book that has been highlighted on, I wonder about the person who did the highlighting, and try to guess things about their life and personality based on what is highlighted. So I think someday someone else will own my books and do the same type of wondering about me.
I also make notations in books on religion that I plan to loan to people who are new to my religion or researching it. I go through the entire book, making notes in the margins, about things I agree with the author on, or places where I feel they made a mistake in their research. It helps those who have asked me to loan them books on the topic, because otherwise they get bogged down trying to sort things out.

If it is your own book, I guess it is fine. I do not mind borrrowing a book with all the main points highlighted. It certainly helps a lot especially when one needs to do research or reading up under time constraint. However, I do come across some reference books where the highlighted text does not suit my needs.

I would either insert a piece of paper or a bookmark with a reference note on it, or I would copy the interesting text into a separate book of references.
I hate to mark books, my friend.
Brightest Blessings.

I would never do that to a book unless it was a text book, How about doing something non-destructive like using a sticky or something. Tearing a page out of a book renders it useless to the next reader.

No I do not use highlighters unless on paper notes during school or notes that I stick everywhere.
Colors are a nice invention but there isn't always a need for them.
And no, I don't fold or tear corners of pages (or pages). I use a bookmark so as to preserve the original condition of the book.

Dear whyaskq, Few years before while reading if I found something interesting then I used to fold the corners of the page and mark the interesting point with pencil. When the highlighters came into market, I started using highlighters and also fold the corners of the page in order to identify where I had highlighted the point. In case I read in website, I just copy the same and paste it on my "INFORMATIVE PAGE". I never torn any pages off from any book.

i used to have a yellow highlighter. i loved using it when i was in college. it helps a lot for sure.
but the past years, i only use pencils whenever i come across nice lines or good thoughts when reading novels. when i don't have a pencil with me, i try to fold a corner of the page and i go back to it later when i got my pencil already.

For me, it depends on the book whether I'll use a high-lighter or not. If it's an instruction book, or something I'm learning from, I'll use the highlighter for the important parts I want to remember. I never tear out pages to file, but sometimes I do dog-ear the corner so I can find it quickly. I use highlighters in booklets that appliances come with. Sometimes you look up the same info over and over and it's just handier. Like, I have one of those Kirby vaccuum sweepers, it has a zillion attatchments for waxing the floor, shampooing the rugs, etc, etc, etc. I just highlight the important parts of how to hook up so it doesn't take as long.

that's the best part of it. you can easily find it back when you needed those lines for something. like when i find good quotes in the novels i am reading and i need to get back on those pages again to copy the quotes, i can find it quicker. it has been a habit to most of us i guess.

If they are study books or magazines then I use a highlighter and if I don't have one on hand then I underline with red pen or any color pen.
If it is not a study book or magazine then I usually put a marker in the page and write it down or sometimes photocopy it if I can get access to one. I don't dare rip it out unless it is my own personal copy and or magazine.

Yes, I also use highlighter and I have like the picture you have for this discussion, it was given to me by my housemate kuya jerry. I use highlighters to to mark verses on my Bible. I also use colorful pens now coz I ran out of highlighters and I enjoyd the using it instead of highlighters but i have to use aruler to make straight markings.

i am a book lover. i would never highlight on my books, unless it's textbook and they are meant for highlighting, underlining, scribbling in the margins and then burnt after the exams. haha.
I will not fold page corners too. If I come across something I find interesting, I'll take the trouble to write it down in my journal, or type it somewhere to keep in soft copy so i can use it next time.
I use highlighters for studying and for marking on presentation notes or research papers that i need to summarise. :)

I used to a lot but not so much anymore. I guess my liking for it just went away or something.

I only highlight textbooks. They are useless after 4-5 years anyway and are destroyed and replaced by newer texts. For other books, I use the little stickies that stick out beyond the page edges (I use the kind that peel off without harming the page) on the part sticking out, I write the paragraph number that contains the information that I felt the need to highlight!
