Something stung my foot!

This evening we decided to go outside just as the sun was setting. Our little kid wanted to get out in the cool of the late evening to run off some of her boundless energy. And, everything was going fine for ten or fifteen minutes. Then she kicked her ball to the back of the fence and as I went to retrieve it, I felt a sharp sting on the top of my foot. Immediately, I squashed whatever it was that had taken a chunk out of my foot. It fell off into the grass, so, I didn't have a chance to see what it was. We've lived here for awhile, so ants are no new thing and it did not feel like an ant. Maybe it was a new breed of ant that I am not familiar with. Maybe a fire-ant? Could that be possible? I think it may have been red. Are fire-ants red?Anyway, by the time we got back inside the top of my foot had a big red bump, almost one third of an inch wide. And, my foot itched really bad. I still can't figure out what bit me. Is anyone familiar with the various types of bites? Do you think it could be serious. It doesn't hurt as much now, but it's still bothersome. What do you put on a mystery bite/sting when you don't know what caused it?
