"For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that." (ASV) Years ago, I heard the old Yiddish Proverb, "We plan, God laughs." It struck me at the time as being somewhat silly because of course, we have to have plans. Otherwise how would we ever move forward in life? That was before God got hold of my plans and I wound up living half a country away from my family and never having accomplished any of the goals I held then. And I'm all the happier for having followed God rather than following my own plans. Each of us thinks we can run our own lives. We think we know what we want. We spend years, decades or even lifetimes chasing dreams that in the end can't fulfill us. We work so hard to attain goals that just end up making us more miserable. All the while the path of our lives is already laid out for us -- all we have to do is follow it. You see, God has a plan for each of our lives. He laid it out for us before we were even born. He knows what will truly fulfill us and he knows what we need and want more than even we do. When we make plans, we don't know what tomorrow will bring. We can't even accurately predict the weather more than a few days in advance, so why should we think we can predict the circumstances around us for the rest of our lives? God on the other hand knows what is to come. And His plans never fall through. "But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations." (Psalm 33:11 NIV) So maybe it's time for us to stop trying to direct our lives. Time to put aside our own feeble plans and look for a path that is more trustworthy. Time to reach out to the Author of Life, and ask for His guidance in all things.

Thank you for reminding me of God's plan for me. I am a teacher and I believe I am where God wants me to be. However, I have wished to do other things sometimes and yet God kept me teaching despite me wanting to leave on occasion.

..the true path ("the way") agrees with me.. as I'm real lazy! My guideline is one rule. To love God. And this is both a state of being, and a verb.. I've found that's what Jesus meant when He said "I give to you a new commandment.." - He said to love God and love your fellow person (for love works no ill) and truly if we love God, we'll be ever trying to draw close to Him, and it's the drawing close to Him that transforms us.. and makes us love ever more and more.. And as it happens, the more we love God (who iS Love) the more we will love our fellow persons.. Great post!:)

When I was young, I figured I could do anything, and then when circumstances changed and things got harder, I started to think that I cannot do anything. Then someone told me the usual stories of someone having a talent in one direction and God leading them to another, such as a man who was a brilliant speaker and university graduate winding up digging wells for people in Africa. I listened to that, and I thought, 'I love to write, I love to sing, and I love to cook and read," and God is not going to let me use those talents? And I was more depressed then ever. Then God led me to my present Church and there they say, "I will do this, DV, or God Willing." Now I know that God will not force me to abandon my talents, but will direct them to HIS Glory." So in a way, you are wrong. God will not cause you to abandon your plans, HE will direct them.

Oh, I never meant to imply that God would force us to do anything... He doesn't operate that way. I just was saying that His plans for our lives are so much better than our own that when we decide to follow His way we'll find that we are happier.

It's funny how a person can know things, but still not realize how much they apply to their own lives. The last six months of my life I have learned this over and over again. And there is just no way to get through it all without submitting to His Will, and following wherever He leads.

It is a shame that I don't say if the Lords will I will do this or that, because my mother would say it every day all day long. Whenever she made plans, she would say, if the Lord's will. However, I am the type that will not move in any big decissions unless I believe that the Lord is directing me. Sometimes that can be a problem I believe. I believe that God wants us to start moving in faith and he will guide us to where he would have us go. I know what you mean about moving across the country. This is what he did with Abraham. He told Abraham to get away from his country and away from his kindred and come into a place where I will show you. Abraham believed and obeyed God and it was counted as righetousness.
