Avtar - how to get one?

Can anyone tell me how to get a different picture (I think it is called an Avtar). I've been into my profile but don't seem to be able to find out how to do it. Also fascinated by the animated ones!! Would be good to know how to do them too. Can you change them regularly or is it once you have chosen one you have to keep it. There are not a lot of instructions on here to help, or am I being dumb and can't find them. It seems all trial and error. Some help would be much appreciated. Thanks all xx

It is quite simple really.
All you do is go to 'edit your preferences' right under where you start a new discussion.
From there, you can easily change your avatar.
