What happened to your most beautiful dishes?

About seven years ago, I came into some very good luck when I acquired a set of bone-china plates in pink and white for practically nothing. (Some were pink and some were white.) They were gorgeous and durable, the type they use in fancy hotels. And, I loved those plates. I couldn't imagine living my life without them. But, wouldn't you know it, fate intervened to rob me of those beautiful dishes. Just before we decided to move from our then tiny apartment to the big city, my spouse and I put everything we owned into storage. And, that included furniture, pots and pans, books and of course those beautiful dishes. Everything stayed there for two months as we finalized our moving plans. And, at the last minute, we decided to go through everything to see what we really could live without so we wouldn't have to pay to have it moved. Mostly I thought we were just going to get rid of old books and papers and such. So off we went to the storage unit for a full day of dejunking fun. And, while I was sitting in our car taking a rest from all the storage unit dejunking, a man walked by our car carrying a huge stack of plates, that looked suspiciously like my prized plates. I had to do a double take, but sure enough he had my plates. A few minutes later my spouse joined me in the car and told me that he'd taken care of the plates and given them to another guy that had a unit next to our storage unit. He said it in such a matter-of-fact manner that I was almost convinced I had told him he should give them away to a complete stranger. I was mildly heart-broken to say the least, but didn't want to make waves so close to our move. And, that was the last time I saw my plates. I have missed those plates ever since. And, I have never found another set so beautiful or useful since then. Well, that's my plate story. What's yours? Have you ever owned a beautiful set of dishes only to lose them tragically? How did you lose your plates? Did your kids break them? Did they get misplaced in the move to another house? Please share.

Oh no- I’d have wrung his neck- I would have too! No one gives my stuff away without checking first- especially nice dishes that you loved. I am the culprit of my dishes disappearing- I break them like they are going out of style- I just can’t help it- that is why I keep my china dishes in a cabinet- people can look but no touching- Me too!

I can't say they were beautiful and to be honest I don't really remember what they looked like anymore. I got my first set of dishes as a wedding present. That was really the only thing "special" about them. But when my husband and I separated and ultimately divorced, they were lost...along with everything else in my kitchen. His parents decided hat two days was long enough for me to get what I wanted from he house...I had a 5 1/2 year old a 3 year old and an 11 month old at the time and barely enough money for gas in my car for one trip there and back much less several. Anyway hey neglected to tell me that and so one day I showed up to find various garbage bags of things siting on the front porch and the house locked. All of my kitchen items were gone. They never even had the decency to tell me what they did with anything.
