My dog is nursing a kitten!

OK I have seen some odd things in my days but this is really odd. One of the 3 kittens we found is nursing off my dog. Now my dog has never had puppies so not sure how or why this is happening but the dog has adopted this kitten as her own baby. She cleans the kitten and lets the kitten nurse. She even pushes it around with her nose if the kitten is going some place she doesn't want her to go. She sits and stares at us if we pick up the kitten as if we might drop her or something. It is the funniest thing to watch. Have you ever had this happen?

We had a young kitten once and she tried to nurse off of my dog. The only thing was, Ivy didn't have any milk..I think the kitten needed the extra sucking even though she wasn't getting any milk..Ivy loved her and took care of her..I just had to watch how much she sucked because Ivy would get sore..but she didn't mind doing it..she would clean her up as well. It was so cute...We provided the milk they have for kittens who aren't quite ready for food yet...she did well...

No, but that is really cool. Actually, I found my Goldie when she was three weeks old and I bottle fed her. It was just like having a real baby, every two hours I had to get up and feed her. After taking care of Goldie, I swore that I would not have children until I was 34.

I had a dog Princess everytime there was new babies in the house she got milk. I always thought it was rather odd , but the old girl raised a kitten and a wild russian pig . She would take other dogs puppies if they didnt have enough milk or if they were sick and couldnt care for them . She was a handy old girl to have around.

Thats so great! I have a Dog and a Budgie Bird. They play constantly! I actually have a photograph of the Bird chewing on the dog's rawhide at one end, and the dog holding the other.....Dogs are such nurturing animals. I think it all comes from the basic "pack" mentality of canines. They instinctively know when an animal is a baby, the same way they do when a human child is present. Of course alot of it has to do with the domestication factor as well. My little Dog "Smudge" will actively protect his pack, like any other dog, but the "mothering" thing for a male animal is uncommon. It is however common for females to adopt other baby animals, as long as YOU accept them your dog likely will too, even if they have never had a litter, it might also be a reflection of how the dog is treated in the first place. If that is the case, you have a loving nurturing home. :)

My kitten can do whatever she wants...my two dogs treat her like small princess...when she show up at home it took me about 2 weeks to introduce them to each other, but now they sleep hugging each other and my kitten is adorable...

That is so cute! What is the mama cat doing about the dog adopting her baby? Once my son brought home a bunny and my dog thought it was one of her puppies. She would cuddle with it and if we picked it up she would growl at us.

A dog and a kitten...what about a dog and a rat? A few years back we have a dog that has a rat friend. We noticed that every meal time our dog will always left a portion of his food. After eating he will lie down beside the plate and watch as if to guard it in case someone would take it. A few minutes after the rat will crawl to the plate then eat what's left of the food. Our dog will watch until the rat finish eating. It was a common sight in our house seeing our dog barking at the rat as if they are playing with each other. Normally we find rat as a nuisance but in this case we just didn't find the heart to get rid of the rat because we are kind of touch of their friendship. It's peculiarity always put our visitor in wonder. How it happened? We actually don't know how and when it happened. One day we just noticed that our dog has an unusual habit until we saw the rat. Even my mother who hate rats found the friendship unique. She made sure that the food served to our dog would be enough for two. Unbelievable!!! Well, i thought so too.
