Do you salute strangers?

When you are in town to do your weekly shopping and you make eye-contact with a stranger on the street, do you salute them? And in that case how? I usually smile and nod at people i walk past and make eye contact with. I think it is important to show respect to people, even if you don't know them. So, how about you?

When I walk past someone, I usually just try to make eye contact with them as I get closer and if they look back at me, then I just smile at them. If they say hello then of course I say hello back to them. Sometimes people are determined to look the other way though, so I just don't bother those people! hehe

To make eye-contact would be staring and that would be rude. I usually smile but sometimes I don't. It depends on who they are. You do not have to greet every stranger you meet and even make eye-contact with them. In fact deliberately doing so would make me very nervous as if I am trying to show that I am very nice person or if the stranger happens to be of a different race, of showing I am very tolerant. So unless he says 'nice day" or unless he or she has a nice dog or a cute baby or toddler, I just go on my way.
