I see that you are 44; probably you are looking for this information for some relative or friend. As explained by friend above, you need to appear for an exam - the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) which is generally held between April and May each year. Presently the format is that you need to appear for a Preliminary exam (in the April timeframe) which is an objective-type exam; once you are through then you need to give the main exam for Physics, Chemistry and Maths separately (non-objective); this is generally held in the May timeframe. I hope this helps; you can get more information including question papers etc at http://www.iitjee.org .

FYI - there are good courses offered by Brilliant Tutorials, Chennai for IIT preparation; their Elite and YG-File courses are pretty good and they the Elite starting from the time the aspirant joins his College (this is the best time to start IIT JEE preparation if not earlier). You can get more information on Brilliant tutorials at www.brilliant-tutorials.com .

IIT means Indian Institute of Technology. There are seven IIT's in India and they are top engineering colleges in India. Persons who studied at IIT have huge demand both in India and anywhere in world. But getting through IIT is very tough. 2-3 lakh students compete for around 4500 seats of which many seats go for SC/ST reservation and possibly OBC reservation after sometime. If you want to get into IIT, you should appear for IIT-JEE i.e. Indian Institute of Technology - Joint Entrance Exam conducted in April of every year. You have to prepare well for this exam. There are coaching classes all over country just for this exam and postal coaching is also available by institutes like Brilliant Tutorials and FIITJEE.
