Thyroid gland and iodine

Although my mother and sister have thyroid problems, I was surprised when doctors said I had a hyperactive one. I was told to take a pill a few months ago, but after some blood tests they have now told me to stop taking the medication and to be careful with iodine. Have more, or less, I had to ask, as I was not sure. None, the doctor answered! That was the first I heard that there was a connection between iodine and the thyroid gland! My first thought was to avoid seafood and buy salt without iodine, but all the salt I could find had iodine, even sea salt and that brought from the Himalayas! Does anyone know the link between iodine and the thyroid and which foods do you try to avoid?
