Are you very desensitized to deaths in other countries?

Like when you hear 100 people were blown up in Iraq or 500 people starved to death in Ethiopia, does it really affect you or is it kind of a meaningless number?

I don't even bat an eye. It's a terrible thing and one of the very few parts of my personality that my partner dislikes: things like that simply don't touch me because I've seen and heard too many. I grew up in the UK when the IRA was still active, so reports of people being shot were pretty common.
Then there was Ethiopia and the whole Band Aid thing: I still remember my father shedding tears in front of the TV when Bob Geldof finally woke the world up to the horrors of famine out there. I also remember not being touched by it (and donating to the fund, of course - I may be insensitive, but I'm not heartless!).
The awful reality of modern life makes us insensitive to most things, I'm afraid.
