it's always been one of my great ambitions to write my own book. i was wondering though, what would you like to read about?
i started to ask this question because i noticed that there are for example a lot of fantasy choldren's books that have similar themes and all masterfully written. Harry Potter however seems to be the most popular. What is in harry potter that is not in other fantasy books? why is it more popular than other similarly themed books?
What is it about modern popular books that you like so much?

I'm not a fan on fantasy or of the Harry Potter books, but I give J.K. Rowling a lot of credit for touching a nerve and bringing out the passion of reading for millions of others. I hope those who've discovered reading continue to long after Rowling stops writing.
I prefer to read about ordinary people and how they overcome obstacles. I like Hemingway, Joyce Carol Oates, Anne Tyler, and so many others. Flannery O'Conner once said that if you have survived your childhood, then you have an unlimited source for writing. (I'm praphrasing this badly.)
What type of book are you thinking about writing? If fantasy isn't your thing to read, then I don't advise you write in that genre. You must be passionate about what you write. If you aren't, your readers won't be, either. I wish you the best. Let me know how you're doing from time to time.

thank you very much Katrinka. I actually like fantasy but i am afraid of venturing because readers seem to be so fickle with the kinds of fantasy that they like to read about. personally, i think fanatsy work by dahl, lewis and tolkein are just as great and imaginative as rowling's work. i just don't understand why harry potter is so much more overwhelmingly popular.
on the other hand, i am also admittedly a realist. i think i have gotten infected by the writers in my country who almost always never write about fantasy. i guess i'll just have to test the waters myself.
thank you very much for your substantial reply. :)
