Office job or general labor?

Wave - I thought this photo was cute. It show "manual labor" in that people are doing the wave. Fits well for this discussion.

Alright, give me your argument. Which job is more difficult? My husband claims general labor because "he's on his feet all day." Or his classic comment is "I didn't get to sit at an office desk all day." Well, maybe so, but as my job is, I have to answer the phone, handle irrate clients, run around the office, meet the demands of my boss, multi-task, etc., all without messing up. Then, I come home, cook, clean, and am a full-time college student. Although he does manual labor, I do a lot of brain work, which tires me out mentally and tires him out physically. So, what do you think? Who's got the argument here?

I personally think physical tiredness cannot be compared with mental tiredness. Even though working in an office does not require massive labor strength, it requires the brain to work extra hard and non-stop. Using only the body to work produces sweat and makes us more healthy, and the tiredness is only to the body and cannot be called fatigue or exhaustion. However, if we use our brain to work, the tiredness is different and can be categorized as exhaustion. I think you win in this situation.

I have done both jobs. When I first started working I worked in factories and yes it is very tiring. As I have gotten older and learn things I have workind in office jobs as well and like you said they are mentally draining, not to mentone physically tiring too considering you have to look up info that is not right at your dest, check with your supervisor who most of the time is on the opposite side of the office, make faxes and copies. Honestly both jobs are equally tiring.

my job at the moment can be categorised as general labor while my hubby's job is office work... i think all jobs are tiring and there is no such thing as an easy job... i would say that as long as we are working, all jobs are tiring...

I don't think there is an argument. Not because I think one is worse than the other...but because everyone handles everything differently. Some people would handle the manual work better and some would handle the office work better. It's kind of like "what's harder raising a boy or a girl" everyone has different opinions on that. "what's a more difficult pet to have..a dog or a cat" ... They're questions that have no right or wrong answer. I mean...you can argue which is better or worse I guess, but there's no true winner.

There is nothing to argue about this, mentally work is morw strenous than physical work. But sometimes, some field work could be very tiring all depending on the type of job one is doing. Please dont shoot you sweetheart cos his job might be more tiring.

It can't be denied that physical or manual labor is really very tiring. It's also a fact that most of the times, they don't get to rest often during this type of work or job. However, after one has rested or had a good night's sleep for about eight hours or more, we can say that our body has been recharged and ready for work again. But compared with office job, the latter does not involve very strenuous activities. It is a combination of physical & mental duties. Office job requires a lot of focus, multi-tasking. Along with this, there are times that the bosses give the staffs a hard time at the office. Mental stress is a difficult thing. Even in our sleep, we sometimes can't escape thinking about penalties for reports unsubmitted or delayed reports or dreadful presentations. Personally, mental activity is harder to deal with.

Ok so neither one of you wins here. I have worked in an office and I have worked construction. Both are very tiring jobs. I found that the emotional tired that I felt at the end of the day after working in an office was far more draining than the physical tiredness I felt after working a day of hard labor! Once I got home from a construction job and had a shower and a cold drink...a few minutes of r&r ...I was good to go. I also slept much better after a physical workout than sitting at my desk all day. Given the choice...I'd rather experience the physical tired.
