What holidays are important to you? And what don't phase you at all?

Working at my new job i am sort of surprised at the holidays i have to work. The only holiday my work is closed i Christmas day. Yet every other "major" holiday were are up and running. This includes the 4th of July, Easter, and Thanksgiving. In my opinion those are the four key holidays. I mean seriously, why is anyone working on the fourth of July? Well i can see why some more crucial places need to be operating but malls and retail stores? this is our nations day to celebrate independence! If it were not for this day who knows what life in the USA would be like... I realise i skipped out on a few "ad in" holidays but those i left out, though they may be important to some are like minor speed bumps in the year, some i even forget about now and then. Except for Mothers day, and Father days of course! Maybe you live somewhere that celebrates completely different holidays? I'd like to hear which are key to you no matter where you live and which are those "minor speed bumps in the year"

I work from home doing my own investments, so in some ways I get all the holidays that the stock market is closed, but I sometimes still do paper work or research on those days. Right now I am single and live far from any relatives, so about the only holidays I do much for are Thanksgiving and Christmas and that is usually to just eat, and sometimes cook, something traditional then. A question, is your avatar a photo of you? It reminds me of a girl friend I had once.

Stocks huh... I have been doing much research on stocks, currency trades and dividend/ high yield investments. I'm not content making others rich if ya ask me. I'm 23 going on 24, i would like to be not working the 9 to 5 grind by 30 hopefully sooner. At the rate I'm accumulating relevant information and closing in on decisions i should be in good shape in a year or so, however if you have any advice i would happily lend my ear!

You are so far ahead of most people your age. You really don't sound like you need my advice. I have never done any currency trading so you are more adventuresome than me. I have done a lot of high dividend investing, enough so that I got burned a little by the mortgage debacle. As a rule I don't give specific advice because I would hate for someone to lose on something I recommended since nothing is ever a sure thing. I have had good luck with some of the oil tanker stocks as far as high dividends, they have dropped off a little lately but still are better than most, and they pay mostly qualified dividends.

Yea i have definitely settled on dividend stocks, its nice to be paid periodically I'm sure. I was doing alot of research into bullion stocks, and possibly mining companies of precious metals and or diamonds as well. Through my research it seems that they pay high in dividends and are no were near as volatile as say oil stocks are. Plus the nice thing is the economics of it all, when the economy goes down, precious metal tend to rise.

I think Malls could close on Major holidays. I celebrate the same ones you do as my Family is Christian and American. But I have worked in places where 24/7 days needed coverage and thought if people from different religions worked there, then everyone could have different days off and still be happy. I like the Solstices and Equinoxes. Also the nearest weekend to whatever full moon. Like if someone went to Synogogue on Saturday, that person could cover for the Christian who wanted Sunday or the Christian could cover for the Muslum who wanted Friday or reverse all of it.

I agree. Yet most employers seem to fight this just to fight it. thats a brilliant idea though. Kudos.

Holidays that I won't work include Christmas and New Years of course. Easter is also a religious holiday so I absolutely will not work that day. Memorial day, Fourth of July and Labor Day I always take off. Labor Day isn't so important in terms of the day but I am used to that long weekend and the family has a traditional get away to mark the end of summer. The other holidays aren't so important to me, and I will work them.

Well working where I work we are open 24/7 due to it being 911 but I understand your point places that dont need to be open are ridiculous that they are I live in Louisiana so a big holiday for us is mardi gras which I am pretty sure everyone in Louisiana can say the same thing it sucks to work for it! And I get to be one of the fortunate that does!
