I Need Help To Make A Decision, Please, Guys!: )

You were all very helpful when I told you that I'd decided to put on a Treasure Hunt for my main fundraising event this year. Well, everything's settled with the Pub Landlords, who will be putting on a barbecue in the evening, and there may be a quiz that evening as well. Naturally, I've been thinking about what I can use as a theme, and I've decided to make it an historic theme. Since there's a lot of history of Saxon Settlements and landmarks, iron foundries and hammer ponds, legends and mills around here, I thought I would incorporate all of those in the clues. However, I have had two ideas for the treasure, and it's here I would like your help... maybe by vote, as to which you think is the better idea, if you wouldn't mind lending your expertise. Firstly, I gave thought to a Quest for the "Lost Bolney Grail", using a rosebowl base, and attaching jewels like the Holy Grail, with the prize, on paper, inside. I thought this might be quite in keeping with the era being used. Secondly, I thought a small wooden chest, with brass decoration, and maybe a few trinkets in it, together with the prize, again written on paper, inside. Do you think either of these might be a good idea, and to keep prize costs down, perhaps offer each member of the winning team a free barbecue and a pint? I'm sure the landlords will oblige as they like to support charity work. So, what do y ou all think??? Grail or Chest?

That's why I put it to the vote, Lakota. I've seen a pewter rose bowl which I thought might be appropriate for the time setting, and I think I would stick purple stones around it just below the fluted top. Then, I would like to make a purple, velvet pouch to put it in. So, I'll take your vote as Grail? Thank you for your input and Brightest Blessings, my friend. I've got two discussions the same going here, so having to add them together and show the running total between the two. lol.

I love the Monty Python version of the Holy Grail, especially the Black Knight and the Giant Rabbit Scenes... they made me laugh so much! I've got the DVDs of both that and The Life of Brian which is really funny as well. I also have the videos, so you could say that I'm a fan, I guess. Anyway, back to the topic in hand. he he he. I've posted this discussion twice, so I'm having to add votes together. So, as it was, before your vote, Grail 6 - Chest 7, you've now tied us up! lolol. Thank you for your vote, my friend and Brightest Blessings.

I'm on the side of the little treasure chest, for 2 reasons; 1/ Treasure should always come in a little wooden box, it's tradition. 2/ The Grail is one of those heathen things adored by Christians. My old friend Merlin would never have allowed such an object into Camelot! (Te Grail story is not in the original French stories of Arthur, nor the first edition of Geoffrey of Montgomerys 'Histories of the Kings of England', and was only included in his later edition, as payment to the monks of Glastonbury Abey, who had fed and bed him whilst he worked on the book) Stay true to the faith, bansih the Grail, and go for a lovely little oak box. I should add that as I have red hair, I am more likely of Angle blood, so boo to the Saxons! However, being a northerner, my red hair could just as easily be from Norse blood! Whatever you decide upon, I hope all goes well, and much fun is had by all, and a nice little sum accrued for the charity. All the best.

So are you telling me that the stories of "visions" of the Grail on Glastobury Tor, are not true? Merlin, indeed had collected a haul of objects which were sacred to him, so why do you think he wouldn't entertain the Grail? If you read Bernard Cornwells Quest for the Grail trilogy though... it was nowhere near Glastonbury, so that would make your observations correct. It was in the hands of Thomas of Hookton's (so called) father, who was a priest, in Dorset. Then it was stolen by the French, and was well sought after by Monks. Eventually, Thomas found it near the church where his father had been priest, and it was nothing but a pottery bowl, which he tossed into the sea, off the Dorset coast. Now... what, I ask, do we believe? I still like the idea of it. lol. As for the Saxon community, they were Anglo Saxons which as you probably know were a mix of traditions. Maybe if you looked your surname up, you might find it's an Anglo Saxon name? he he he. More study for you. Brightest Blessings, my friend, and thank you again for such interesting input. +

Me with shaved head - Fritz Langs Nosferatu
Actually, I have a small confession, my real surname has Slavic origins, and my family history starts around Dracula country! I suppose that's why I look like Fritz Langs Nosferatu, but with a ginger wig! At the last count, there were 9 positive Grail sites in Britain, and, at least, 70 across Europe - I suspect that it would be in Rochdale, as that is the centre of the universe, in my little mind, anyway. My thoughts are that if the stories of Arthur and Merlin existed for 300 years without any mention of a Grail, and then get added in a revised book, where the original didn't bother to mention it, then it was either unimportant (which seems unlikely), or made up. Whether the cup from the last supper, or the cup used to catch Jesus' blood on the cross, I suspect it would have stayed around Judea or Byzantium. It's just those damn Catholic priests of the Middle Ages messing with pagan folklore again. According to the 12t century writers, the grail was kept by the Fisher King, Pyrus, whose daughter was Lancelots wife, prior to being brought to Camelot. MAkes a great story, though. All the best.
