Do you Swear a lot when you Speak?

Well, honestly I must confess that I do. Not in an agressive way, as if I were mad when i say those bad words. It's just that I am lazy when I speak so i use the easiest and laziest way of saying things. However, when i have to be polite i am able to use a polished perfect language, which is easy for me because i've always been good with languages in general. So what about you people? do you swear a lot when you speak like me or are you more polite and you refrain?

I don't have a problem with swearing but I don't really use it. Not even when I"m upset. I could say that it is because I'm older, but I know plenty of people my age that swear a lot. I guess it was so drilled into me to use proper vocabulary and to find the appropriate words to express what I have in my mind that I really prefer to do that even after all these years. Maybe it's just being snobbish. The way I grew up everyone knew swear words but we rarely used it, it was reserved to - shudder to say this, oh my , I apologize I'm just trying to explain, I have nothing against it, I am very close to it now- people that were poor and had no chance for a good education. So in a way, thinking back I wonder if there's still a bit of a snob streak in me. I fought about it as a teenager but maybe it was always here.

It is curious arka, because when i am REALLY upset i don't swear that much, i tend to get silent. It's when i'm so so when i swear more. I suppose that it's just that i have a strong temper, so when i'm really mad i prefer to be quiet so that i don't say anything stupid i could regret of later.

Yeah I know what you mean. I"m told that it is easy to see when I'm upset just because I tend to act in the opposite way of most people : I don't swear, I don't raise my voice - apparently I actually lower it - and I become even more polite - so polite it's scary a friend tells me LOL For me, the few times that I actually did swear, it was at times where I was insecure and down. Not sure how to classify that :)

Actually I dont swear when I speak in public. I dont know I just think its rude to swear when your talking to other people. I know a lot of people that do swear and I think its disgusting apparently they either do it because they want to seem tough by swearing or they just dont care what other people think of them. The only time I swear is when Im alone and im really mad then I let it all go.

When I am home and not around my kids I am the biggest potty mouth around and it feels so darn good, LOL. However around my kids or anyones kids for that matter, I don't use one bad word. I restrain myself a lot of the time cause I know not everyone wants to hear that stuff and I can respect that.

hehe, i know what you mean. Yeah, i try not to swear too much if small kids are around, but i really find it hard sometimes...ugh i am so bad hehe. At work though, i surprisingly control my temper easily and always talk calm to angry customers, something i doubt i would be able to do if i wasn't working.

I used to cuss a lot. But since I've had my daughter and especially now that she is starting to talk I've started watching my language around her. I certainly don't want her picking up any of my bad language and being a cussing toddler.

Wow, more and more people telling me about their swearing habits getting erased with kids hehe. Yes, i think it's not the best idea that our kids hear us cussing permanently...they have to learn proper ways of saying things and of talking to people. They will learn swearing words anyway, so better if at least they learn proper words from us.

I can't agree more, at least not until they are older cause by than they will know what the words mean.. So swearing needs to be watching mainly around young children..

Yeah well, since they will learn it anyway, better if don't learn that it's used all the time! and not from his her parents, that's definitely not a good idea.

I swear much more than I should do, although I curb it depending on who I'm with. (at work or with children around etc.) I think it's a little bit due to smaller vocabulary, or at least one more limited in use. Like you, I don't swear just in anger, but to add emphasis to phrases and it does work like "ummm" or "errrr" to give you thinking time while you're speaking. You know that swearing is contagious though? I used to almost never swear when I was younger, nobody in my house or family did. My stepdad swore more than anybody I know though. He could rattle off three or four 'F's in a single sentence and a few others for flavour! Gradually my mother and brother and me swore more and more until the language was really blue! I then passed it on to my (now) wife. When we started dating she never swore at all, but until we had the baby she swore almost as bad as me at home, she'd picked it up from me over time. My niece grew up among my stepdad and all the rest of us and NEVER swears, she's 10 now and I don't think I've ever heard her use a single swear except for repeating them when 'telling tales' on somebody else! I hope my daughter is the same, as I've caught myself a few times when stressed letting out the occasional 'S' or 'B'.

That's good to know wifeofharvey. I guess it makes sense that positive changes in vocabulary can be passed on as easily as negative ones.

I swear much more than i should do too rhino hehe. It's hard with kids yep, because there are times when these words must be used to explain things. I find it ridiculous how some parents use stupid words to avoid using the ones they want to say. I mean, cussing for no reason can be bad, but man, being like Simpsons' neighbors, the Flanders, isn't it as bad? lol.

Proper acceptable language can be contagious also. We don't swear [very often anyhow]. A grown grandson has come to live with us for awhile. His swearing if very prevelent, but I have noticed that in the month he has been here, his language is becoming more discriptive WITHOUT the use of swear words. And no, we haven't been saying anything about his vocabulary. Its just that we give him time and attention to say what he is thinking without him having to use the foul short cuts.

I do the same calais, kids will learn those words sooner or later, but i hope it's not from me and the later they do it the better. That way they will have more time for learning the proper way of saying things before getting "contaminated" by slang.

Well, I've never felt the need to swear that much, but I guess it depends on who I'm talking to also, at home, me and my sisters love to swear when we are talking to each other, in a funny way, not in an insulting or aggressive way, but we make sure our parents never hear us speak like that. And then, with some friends, it's cool and funny to talk like that sometimes. But as for swearing in anger, I never do that. That just makes things really bitter, if I'm arguing I make sure never to swear, because words can hurt, and swear words spoken in anger can further aggravate the situation. But as long as it's funny and it's with friends or family it's cool.

You're welcome. Yeah, you got what I meant to say exactly. I guess it's not so much the words themselves but the intentions with which we use them that matters.

yep, what you said in your last sentence is the type of "cool swearing" i was talking about, not about using cussing as a tool to aggravate or insult others. thanks for replying.

No, I try to speak without using a lot of slang, and certainly without 'swear' words. I think it is disrespectful, not only to my listeners but to myself as well. While I don't usually say anything to people who are spewing garbage out of their mouths, I am a whole lot less likely to give any real attention to what they are saying. It really bothers me when people think it is 'cute' for a baby/toddler to use 'bad' or rude language.

I understand your point wifeofharvey, and partly i agree, but i think that in certain situations, and with certain people, it can be funny. Not saying that rude words are something that must be endorsed at all, kids must be taught the right way, but well life is what it is, and i wouldn't say that using certain words is BAD always. Anyway i suppose it's all up to what each one of us prefer.

And I agree with you, there are times that the words can be sooooooooo funny. My husband and I both use some sexually orientated language with each other, but we are always very careful, to not be overheard.

I used to swear a fair amount when I was younger, and that usually depended on the company I was with at the time. I don't do as much anymore, my four year old is like a sponge and absorbs everything, and I think he can learn his new words once he gets to school, rather than me teach him. I still let the odd couple of curses out when I'm angry, but mostly tame ones!

That's something people notice about me a lot. I don't swear. I'll say crazy lame things like "Holy falafel!" or "that scared the beegees out of me!" and go out of my way to say something else instead of a bad word. When I was younger I cursed a lot. But I don't know one day I just stopped and I find it more fun to make up stupid things to say in place of where you would normal say the f word or the S word or whatever. I have to be really really angry to finally actually use a swear word!

I admire your self control, but i don't have it myself lol. It doesn't take me that much anger to finally swear seriously. thanks for replying.

I noticed lately that I have the tendency to swear whenever my nerves gets rubbed but as much as possible, I really consciously avoid swearing especially when there are children around. In instances like this, I just stew myself in silence. LOL!

It really depends. I swear when me and my friends are drunk and try to talk stupid and be funny! We could swear all night about nothing if we lose our minds. But I guess it's a good way to release our daily pressure. I don't swear usually when I talk unless someone talks vulgar language to me, otherwise, I am "usually" very polite.

No, I do not use the word swear. I think it is used by those who want to show that they are saying the truth even though they are lying. It differs from person to person. Some people might not find it bad and they use it in their every day life. Also, depends on the situation too.
