Why is It When We Were Kids.....???

I'm really, really wishing that it were winter already...or at least late fall. The weather has been brutal, hot, sticky and humid...Just this morning though we had a really bad thunderstorm and they suspect that an actual tornado hit in the Brooklyn part of NYC--Instead of refreshing, the rain only made the humidity even worse But thinking back to when I was a kid, I can't remember the weather bothering me like it does now--no matter how hot it was, as kids we all would run and play, and were content. So why the difference? Why as we get older does the hot weather bother us so much. And how HOT is it where you are??

Yes, pyewacket, time does take it's toll on us. I really think it's because we unconsciously condition our bodies to become less tolerant of the things that we enjoyed as kids. We reached almost 100* today-equal to around 105*. As I stated in a previous discussion, this extreme heat is unusual for our part of the country. It has really been every bit as brutal as you're experiencing. To top it all off, management called a mandatory meeting for all tenants today. I dreaded the idea of getting dressed to attend, but thought it just might be important. It was the SOS. Complaints about people not obeying the rules, etc. They even passed out tips on how to manage in this extreme weather.

I suppose the one real blessing is that we don't have to walk around in our homes dressed the way our grandparents or great-grandparents did---one didn't exactly walk around with shorts and a tee shirt in those days..LOL--my mom once told me that one still had to be a "lady" in my great-grandparents time and wear the full-length, to the floor dress, with all those corsets underneath...it was customary in those days for ladies to walk around with a little bottle of smelling salts to revive them

The temp to day is 100 degrees and humidity is 110. It is awful outside. The ac units have to work harder also. And yes the the weather is bothering me. I have had a sever headache for 2 weeks now. Nothing will get rid of it.

Thank goodness I don't get headaches from the weather but have been feeing very drained, and it was so humid here today you felt you could just grab at the air and wring it out with the moisture..yuk

I've noticed the same thing you have. The heat just bothers me way to much anymore and when I was younger it didn't bother me at all. Now I am more then ready to welcome in fall/winter. I want those cooler temps. It had been really hot here, in the 100's and 90's. The past week though its been the comfortable enough 80's. But today is WONDERFUL. Its overcast and only like 70. I am so loving today.

It is very hot in Chicago. I was at home during winter time and I am home again. I try to limit outdoor activity due to extreme hot weather....uffff...you are right, rain didn't help at all...sticky.... When I was small, I used to live in area where summer was cold and winter mild...we were happy if summer high was at 72 F....

I know, I remember being outside in the summer and didn't think much about the weather because I was free from the house and school and could do pretty much whatever I wanted so the weather wasn't that important. Plus we got in the water a lot too, either someone's wading pool or the three foot one that my parents got one year or just got in the sprinklers. And I lived in the same town that I grew up in, Bakersfield, California and it was 100 degrees in the summer then too. It's cooler here this week though, its only 90 degrees. I know I can't handle the heat at all now and in fact can hardly breathe when it's 100 degrees so I stay in the air conditioner all the time. I can't wait for winter. Our winters are relatively mild but can still be cold but I prefer the cold now that I am older.

I prefer the cold now too that I'm older. I don't know where Bakersfield is but I have a friend in Chico CA which is up north and she says it's always up in the 100s...somehow I didn't think northern CA got so hot!

Well England is never particularly hot - which is probably why I'm happy living here, because I truly cannot stand the heat! At the moment, the daytime temperatures are about 23 C (I think that is the low to mid 70's F), and that is pretty average. Last weekend it hit 30 C which is about 80 F and I was too ill to go out of the house, because I burn and hate hot weather, so I don't think I would survive where you are. I don't think I coped any better in the heat when I was a child either - mainly because I am so fair-skinned that my Mother always kept me out of it as much as possible because I burn so badly! Pale and interesting - that's me:-))

You are welcome anytime:-)) Of course we have a lot of bad things and areas - everywhere has - but actually I've lived in several other countries but really wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Mmmm...maybe I'll move to England!! Actually I wouldn't mind living in some nice English countryside area...from what I've seen in general of the British Isles there is such a different "atmosphere" there that sounds right up my alley...I read a lot of Darkwing's discussions who is from England and it's like...take me away...LOL

I think the humidity has changed. When I was young, we used to have decent Summers with a nice breeze and frost and snow in the Winter. With Global Warming, the humidity seems to have increased. Thunderstorms used to clear the air and the smell of the newly fallen rain on the dusty streets had a special aroma. I don't notice it these days. I think that's the main problem... Global Warming has changed the weather patterns. Brightest Blessings.

Progress did it, Pye. Whether we can put it right now, I don't know, but thinking back, there was a time when the Earth was pretty dusty, and there was a time when some of the land which is now, was underwater, and there was the ice age, so maybe we're just moving in cycles, and the hole wasn't noticed previously, when we weren't so knowledgable? Who knows... all I know is, the weather patterns have changed so much, I think we all need to think back to Noah's actions. :)

I noticed that too the other day when it rained....there was always a nice smell to the air afterward...well the other day it rained and there was a really weird smell..yuk...not at all pleasant..can't explain it but just didn't smell refreshing like it used to...yes, Global Warming is wrecking havoc with mother earth and we did it to ourselves didn't we..

WOW! A tornado in NYC! That's bizarre! I too have been ready for winter and fall lately. I've been watching a lot of the Gilmore Girls and man! Seeing all that snow and autumn colors and sweaters...it'd be nice about now :) I hate the summer season for this very reason. All the humidity... I think the reason it didn't bother us when we were kids is because we just didn't care how hot it was just as long as it wasn't raining to spoil our time outside. Plus the hotter it was the more likely hood of talking the parents into playing in the water or playing in the baby pool to cool off. Though I have noticed my nephew hates being outside much. He prefers to spend most his day in playing video games. And I hate that. I don't think he should play out too much obviously when it's so nasty hot and humid either. I think it's nice his mom also feels that way :)

Was it a real bad tornado? Was there a lot of damage? PS - I started a new job this week and haven't had the time to get online but for a few minutes at a time. My mail box is extremely full once again with new discussions. I'll get to them all eventually :)

Yup--the folks in the Brooklyn and Staten Island area of NYC are still recovering from that bizarre tornado hit. That's not a bad idea..to watch movies set in the wintertime...think that would make us feel cooler...LOL

I guess you can say that I am an exception to this isuue. I have had bronchial asthma since a young child. the heat and especially the humidity reek havoc on my breathing. Even as a child I avoided being outside when it was really humid sticky etc to be able to breathe easier. These days here in Minnesota I have been indoors in my air conditioning a lot due to the high heat and humidity. Can't change these effects either. I can control the asthma attacks but not the harshness of trying to breathe normal in this weather. I can't wait for fall. Winter doesn't suit me too well if its especially cold either. Ugghh! HAHAHA!! HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

Funny...my grandmother was the opposite..she had asthma and the heat and humidity was good for her...in fact, when we all used to go on vacation to Florida, years and years ago, my mom would pick either July or August to go...yeesh...might as well have gone to Antartica in winter--thought it was so dumb to go then--but it was good for my grandmother--I can't wait for fall/winter either.

I have heard that today Kentucky is suppose to be breaking a heat record, by getting to about 112. I'm like thinking great, so much for the outdoorsy things I had planned to do since it's my birthday today. GRRRR!! The heat still don't bother me as much, but the humidity just about kills me. Living in Kentucky is the first time I have had to experience really high levels of moisture in the air. And it don't play to nicely with my system. Though I do have to admit that the humidity does help my skin condition some, so it's not so irritating and itchy. If I ever move back to the desert again, I know I would be outside again doing a whole lot more than what I am doing now. Give me dry heat any day and I'll certainly be a kid again..lol

It's down to the high 90s now, but with the humidity it still feels much hotter that what it really is outside. Thanks for the birthday wishes! :) They are appreciated still. It's better late than never, as I always say..lol I think that was someone else that started the discussion about cake. I had a german chocolate cake, smoothered in coconut frosting. YUMMMYYY!! lol I basically stayed inside where it was cool for my birthday, but after it cooled down some my hubby took me out to do some star gazing. It was nice just to get out of the house and it felt special since it's been awhile since my hubby and I have had the chance to be really alone.

I know what you mean. I don't remember being so affected by the heat when I was a kid. I loved playing outside as a kid, now I can barely crawl outside. I was in the upper 90's today, going to be close to 100 for the next few days - wish the rain would return!

Happily, most of outside work was done either early in the day or by the teenager. When we did have to go outside after that, it wasn't for long periods, to put the cats outside or bring them back in.

Current temperature here in Hamilton is 30°C with humidity at 45%... The reason you can't remember the weather bothering you as a kid like it does now... because it didn't! Imagine that! Seriously, kids don't pay much attention to the weather unless they have a parent who is constantly complaining about it (then they learn to complain about the weather, too). Also, when we were kids, air conditioning wasn't as prevalent as it is today. Back then it was an exception to have air conditioning. Today, it's an exception to NOT have it.

don't feel bad pye...i don't have one either and don't want one. Our bodys adjust to the temperature and if we get all comfy in the air conditioning and then step out it is a shock to our bodies...it isn't healthy. I just survive the short heat waves we have each year. I also don't need the added utility bill.

I was ten when I had my first heat stroke....I think I actually handle heat better now that when I was young. Part of the problem when I was young was that I was so small and I dehydrated very fast. when I was ten years old I only weighed about 45 pounds. I do have a healthy respect for heat now.

I am wishing that it was the fall season as well and looking forward to the cooler weather. The heat and humidity for the past couple of weeks has been brutal. It did not bother me as much either when I was a kid. I guess I had more energy and was in better shape physically than I am now. The rain used to cool things down but not anymore. I guess as we get older our bodies and patience change a bit.

I've often thought that Pye when I've seen kids running and playing in parks when it's almost too hot to breathe properly. We were so strong healthy as kids, hot and cold didn't bother us. I guess as we age our physical coping mechanisms are somewhat deteriorated. Our arteries are probably clogged with junk as are all our other tubes and channels. I know I'm needing to de-tox now, I can actually feel all the crap clogging me up. Do you know any natural rememdies I can take for de-tox purposes?
@pyewacket (43903)

Mmmmm...natural remedies for de=toxing?? Yeesh, will have to look..One thing my great-grandmother swore was making infusions of Dandelion tea which is also known as piss-in-bed tea as it is a diuretic and gets rid of the toxins in one's system--people with diabetes might have to use caution as it can lower blood sugar, which is good, but not if one is already taking meds to regulate blood sugar

I don't know WHY, but I do know what you mean. I was just in Cuba, talk about HOT !! But my little guys were running around like nothing, playing, etc and I was just sitting and DYING of heat. Even my hubby that used to live in Cuba was dying from the heat. It really was terribly hot. My boys are 8 & 10 and they acted like it was a beautiful spring day. It is hot up here in Illinois now, but I have a newfound appreciation for our heat up here. It is minus a lot of the humidity, so a 90 degree day here feels more like a 70 degree day in Cuba. There is HUGE difference in the heat factors.

As kids we did not feel the weather because we where too busy playing. We could tolerate anything, remember swimming in ice cold water and swimming even when we where shivering. Now if I swam in that cold water it would take me days to warm up. LOL

I don't remember the weather affecting me and other kids so much, but I do think their are weather trends in the last few years of the temperatures being more extreme. I'm in New Mexico, the desert so we do have to be careful. I've noticed when it gets really hot, kids aren't out 'till it gets dark. I guess parents let them out later to make up for not being able to play during the day. I feel bad because I have a baby and would love to take him out more often to experience the outside but I can't breathe when it gets hot and it gives me a headache - even when I drink well. BTW I love Bell, Book, and Candle! If that's your cat he's very handsome.
