co-sleeping with babies

i just wrote a piece for my blog about co-sleeping with babies. actually it was more like a long question. in my country, parents almost always sleep beside their babies. i have read though that the US Consumer and Product Safety Commission cautions against co-sleeping because it can kill a baby. i was just wondering why infant sleep related deaths happen in America and not in my country. my full article is on http://causticthoughts-gracemags.blogspot.com/ if you'd like to read it.

Both of my kids are not babies anymore. But when they were, they both slept in our bed, between my wife and me. Nothing happened. But I do admit, during those times, I automatically became a 'light sleeper' since i was always conscious that i might suffocate, or even worse crush, my baby. But it sure is a wonderful feeling when you're asleep and you feel your baby's arms around you (when they were toddlers), like you're some sort of a comfort blanket / pillow. My youngest (8 years old) still sleeps beside me, and there are times that my eldest (17 yrs old) squeezes herself in the bed too.

Oh! I forgot to add. When I come home from a night out with the guys, my wife tells me to sleep on the floor. No exceptions. I can't blame her. hahahahaha!

I heard that co-sleeping with babies is not a good thing because the baby can be killed in it's sleep. My family have never co-slept with any of our off-spring.

yes. that is the advisory of the consumer commission in the U.S. in my country though it has always been a cultural practice to co-sleep. on my part i have always been extra extra careful. yes it scares me sometimes that i have to sleep beside a tiny little creature :)

There really could be many reasons, Maybe they aren't reported as much as they are here in the states? BUt it really could be that there aren't as many sids related deaths in your country. My babies and I would always fall asleep in bed together while I was nursing, but when I awoke, I simply put them in the bassinet next to me, so they could sleep safely. I dont personally trust myself or my husband (who is a very hard sleeper) enough to leave a baby in bed with us, but there may be others who feel like it's safe. I think that if you take out extra pillows and use only light blankets, you and the baby should be fine. Most people however have 5 or 6 pillows on their beds and just as many blankets and a comforter to boot. So maybe that is part of the cause, we like excess blankets here over in the states.. (:

yeah. i guess that could be the reason because you also live in a country with a colder climate. you gave me an idea though. lying beside a bassinet is definitely safer than lying beside a small baby. thanks for dropping by wmaharper :)

Co-sleeping with babies is very common for every mother and it may be for few minutes or hours but it happens with every mother as i noticed my cousins and sisters a lot in my family and dont find it to be the doing sin against the law or doing harm to the baby.

First of all I start by saying that when you have a baby you'll practically do anything to get some sleep so that is why my babies always slept with me. According to a lot of studies, babies have a high chance of suffocating either by a parent rolling on top of them or a baby getting wedged between the mattress and headboard or suffocating by a sheets/blanket. With that being said, my oldest stopped breathing when he was 3 months old (not in bed - it was during waking hours) anyway, he was in the hospital and a lot of tests were performed and they found nothing to link the breathing episode - with that being said - his doctor told me that co-sleeping actually better for a baby because it reminds the baby to breathe. They breathe when you breathe.

In my country (the Netherlands) they also warn not to sleep together with your baby. You might roll on top of the baby, I have 2 kids myself, and sometimes they do sleep with me. But I sleep very lightly, with every move they make I am awake. So I am sure nothing would happen. I think it is up to the parent to co-sleep or not

i guess a parent who co-sleeps really has to be a light sleeper then. i admit that i'm pretty much a light sleeper too. :)

WE do have our son sleep in our bed. We just had a very bad experienced when he was still a baby he used to have a separate crib besides our bed. But we noticed that he became sickly so we decided to placed him in the middle of the bed and from then on he got better sleeping by our side. It is better to monitor him just right beside us especially when he is sick. We also got used to him sleeping by our side.

In other countries they warn their citizens in co-sleeping with their babies for the reason they are to big unlike us here who are most of all petite. hehehe ...
