Michigan's luxury tax

Michigan has decided to introduce a new luxury tax, this tax would apply to movies, sporting events, theaters and other entertainment events. Personally I think it's a good idea, but a percentage not a set tax and it shouldn't be much under 8 percent. Michigan needs the money, people are leaving because theres no jobs and we need to keep our schools running and roads and bridges in repair. I'm just tired of people not wanting to pay for these services, but expecting them to be there. I've lived in other states and we get things pretty cheep up here. Anyway if you live in Michigan what do you thing? If not what would you think if your state or country did this?

Well I live in Michigan and I don't find it cheap here at all. Maybe because I live close to Detroit or something. I have also lived in several other states as well but with the exception of California Michigan is very expensive. Housing is expensive, so are gas, property taxes, utilities, groceries, insurance and just about everything. I'm amazed when I visit the places I lived in Texas and Pennsylvania and see houses on the water twice as big as mine for half the price. The cost of living in many other states is way lower than here in Michigan yet Michigan has nothing to offer. Sure the lakes are nice but that's about all Michigan has to offer. I pay over $6000 in property taxes each year but the city and the state keep asking for more. I have no children, I use nothing but the library, so where is all that tax money going? I would be willing to pay a little more for certain things if it truly would help the state but I honestly don't trust "the state" to do a good job with my money. Honestly it really doesn't affect me as I don't go to movies or sporting events because they are too expensive as it is. I'd love to go to a Red Wings game once in a while but tickets are already over $50 each plus gas plus parking plus a $10 Coke. If they keep taxing us people will just stop doing those things. Today on the news I saw where one of our legislators wants to impose a 50 cent a gallon gas tax to encourage people to drive smaller cars or to stop driving as much altogether. What does that help? It doesn't. It prevents people from driving around the state and contributing tourism dollars, it keeps people out of the stores, it keeps people from driving down to Cedar Point for a day or a weekend. The economy here in Michigan is already horrible and I just don't see it helping any. Maybe we should have a better public transportation system. But that will never happen as we are the Motor City where everyone is encouraged to have 14 cars that they cannot afford so that we can support the automakers. I don't know what the answer is, I really wish I did, but I don't think taxing us more and more is going to help. At least not now when so many people are barely getting by here as it is. All I know is that I'm completely disgusted with the state of Michigan and the sooner I can get away from it, the better. It was once a great place but it ain't all that anymore.

I didn't know about the gas tax, that is just stupid. We pay enough for gas already! I've lived in Texas also and yes you can buy things cheaper, but I think they pay more in taxes for it,there sales tax is bigger then ours. I know there are other taxes they pay that we don't, that and they tax there food. That screwed me up alot when I was buying grocery's. Living in Detroit I'm sure you pay more for things then I do living in the thumb. I know when I go to Great lakes Crossing or downtown Detroit, there are so many times I just have to remind myself it's cheaper in Saginaw! Then I only buy what I can only get there and only there.

But the good thing about Texas is that there is no income tax. And OMG the weather! When my friend comes up here from Texas he's like how the heck do you afford to live up here, it's too cold, and my gawd there's nothing to do! And I agree with him. I just don't understand the costs here when it's just not an exciting place to live. Yeah, I wish I could remember who it was that was suggesting the gas tax. I was watching while drying my hair this morning and missed who suggested it.
