How do I help my throat?

United States

I went to the doctor on Tuesday with a sore throat and earache. They did a strep culture and found out that I had strep throat. I have been on anitbiotics for two days now and just got over the fever and chills stage at 6pm Wednesday night. Now my question is, is there anything I can do for my throat until the antibiotics make the whole thing go away? I can hardly swallow and that makes it very difficult to eat anything. Any advice for me right now would be wonderful. I am still quite miserable.

Yor doctor would have advised you to gargle with saline water 3 to 4 times daily. Pop a painkiller 1 hr before food and manage to have liquid nutritive diet because antibiotics need to be accompanied by proper nutrition. You will tend to starve on account of the miserable pain but you need strength to fight the infection.Till the infection subsides the pain is going to be horrible. Drink plenty of hot water . Keep drinking sips of hot water, hot fluids, every now and then; try steam inhalation in such a way that the outer portions of your neck and throat are exposed to steam. Get well soon!

So, how is your throat now? Do this saline water gargling every time that you consume some ice cold drink or icecream and this should be done at night before you go to bed. Ideally, you should do this soon after you take ice cream . Since you are prone to this throat infection, it will seize an opportune moment to gain entry and this saline water gargling will be a defense strategy.

Actually herre in the midwestern United States we are seeing more Physician's assistants now and even they are too busy to tell us much. I was not told to gargle as I don't think she thought of it fast enough. Thank you for all of your advice. It is really helpful to me.

If you have some vinegar and honey in the house try a tbsspoon of Apple cider vinegar and a tbspoon of honey mixed than drink it. Raw honey and undestilled vinegar also have antibotics in them as do garlic. I hope your throat gets to feeling better soon

Hot toddies. Yes that does sound good about now. Anything hot or warm is helping quite a bit. If I drink anything too cool it starts to hurt again. Good think I like warm drinks anyway huh?

why don't you use some candymint like strepsils or fisherman's friend strong. You could boil ginger and drink it or if you do not want , try also garggling warm salted water. or better yet ,since you are in the net , research on sore throat remedies ,definitely you will find something far better than what i have suggested.oh, try not to eat anything that might irritate it, and talk less.

I tried the mint candy and the ginger. The ginger calmed me and the mint did help so they both had a way of helping. Ginger is something that I have always found to have a calming effect on me. Probably because it reminds me of home.

Your throat has a streptococcus bacteria that is why it is called strep throat.Strep throat can strike both children and adults, but only about five to ten percent of sore throats are caused by a bacterial infection. Most sore throats are caused by viral illnesses and are not responsive to treatment with antibiotics. A true streptococcal infection of the throat often leads to excruciating throat pain accompanied by difficulty swallowing and even speaking. Fever may be present, and the tonsils are often covered with a whitish layer of pus. Cough and runny nose are not commonly related to strep throat, but it is possible to have a streptococcal infection along with a viral upper respiratory infection and symptoms of a cold. The bacterial infection may result in enlarged, tender lymph nodes in the neck. Children may have an accompanying rash; a streptococcus infection along with a rash is commonly termed scarlet fever. Just follow the doctors advice, yes, drink antibiotics, for faster recovery. You can overcome that, just drink the antiobiotics on required dozage and time.

I have just recovered from sore throat few days ago. I took antibiotics as prescribed by my doctor and religiously followed the dosage. I really became weak for several days but I had my tonsils cured. I am taking now ginger tea which I believe is a natural healing herbal drink that soothes my throat and gives relaxing effect. I add lemon and honey to have a flavor.

Right now, my child is undergoing medication for that culprit illness. She can't swallow and drink, but I noticed that she can eat something like chicken soup and other soft foods. For the meantime, you have to just take lots of rest.
