Do you tip housekeeping at hotels/motels?

I always leave a note from the bedside table pad that says Housekeeping - Thanks! with a tip on top of it. I never know if they would be worried about losing their job over taking money without a note like that.
Also, sometimes I have bought something while staying there that I don't want to take home (like starch for ironing clothes) and I will leave a note saying they can have it.
Do you tip housekeeping?

Yes, you will run across bad service occasionally. That is why I like to tip when it is good.

Hhmm... No, I've never done that in my life. Actually I've never thought of doing it, but I think it's a great idea. :)
I don't think they'd be worried for taking something that's clearly meant for them to take. Has anyone ever refused to take it?

yes, I left it on a table once with no note and it was not taken. That's when it occurred to me that I would need to let them know what it is for. My husband will often just leave it on the unmade bed with no note and it is always taken.

I don't always leave a tip, I believe that wages should be at a reasonable level, especially with the amount that is charged per night to stay in a hotel anyway. If I do leave a tip, I give it to the person themselves, so that the money goes to the correct person. If I stay in an hotel or boarding house on holiday I usually leave some kind of tip though. Staying in places like a travel lodge or travel inn, I never leave a tip.

Yes, it is good to give it to the person themselves when you have the opportunity.

I know that in some countries tips are part of the price, but in Spain is not. When you pay, you pay the whole service, including the service. So if you tip, you only do it if you want to and if you have felt good about the service. If it's been mediocre or bad, you just don't tip and that's it.

that is my philosophy on tipping anyway.... I don't just tip because I am supposed to, I tip when someone has earned it.

I always tip housekeeping. I am not always sure how much to leave. Usually I leave between $5 - $10 depending on how nice the room is.

Do you worry, like me, that if you don't leave a note they would be afraid to take the money?

Hi,I recently started working at a hotel doing housekeeping and never been tipped. This is something i just heard about from only you.Maybe they do tip,but i dont see nothing.Maybe because the boss goes in the rooms before me,dont know and dont want to know. Some people leave QUITE a mess, etc.Your very nice to leave a note saying -thanks plus a tip.It means what we do is appreciated for the clean and sanitized rooms. Its alot of work to dust, vacuum, wash bedding, towels and sanitize the bathrooms, etc. The other day i cleaned 15 rooms myself, head to toe,it wouldve been nice to have someone like you to leave little note.It wouldve made my day better!

I used to work in the housekeeping at motels, and I did get a tip once in a while.
Now when I go to a motel, when I am on vacation,I do tip the maids. They always bring in clean towels and take out the trash and tidy up the place. They work very hard, I no, I once did it.

I don't tip them. Please correct me if I am wrong, but housekeeping in hotels make at least minimum wage. Unlike restaurant servers who make 2 bucks and hour and depend on tips to make a living wage. I generally only stay one or two nights in a hotel anyway. They don't do much for me. They do the work after I am gone and I clean up after myself.
If hotel housekeepers do not make minimum wage someone plese let me know and I will change my habits.

I don’t – but I don’t usually let them in to clean the rooms- I just put out the garbage in front of the door (as well as dirty towels- and ask for clean ones- I hang the do not disturb sign on the door- I don’t like people in the room when I’m staying in it- so I don’t tip because I don’t use the services- I guess if I was there for an extended time (more than a couple of days) I would let them clean and probably tip.

that is a good idea to give it to someone to see it gets allocated appropriately.

Actually I never did. Yes we give tips to the guys that bring us to the room, taking care of of our lugage. And the waiters in the retaurant.
You got me thinking here. Next time I'll do as you. And probably will think about your discussion here then as well. ;)
