I just got a phone call from what I believe was the American Cancer Society. I have no problems with that, and they mentioned my previous donations, so I guess it really was them.
However, the lady on the phone asked me if I'd like to help them mail out some letters to friends and family I guess. She told me she would send me 15 letters with all of the envelopes. I would need to stuff the envelopes, pay for the stamps and mail out.
I've NEVER heard of the cancer society doing that type of thing, so I'm wondering if that is legit?
I don't mind buying the stamps if this is REALLY for the cancer society, but if it's not for them, I don't want to do it.
To anyone that volunteers their time to the cancer society, have you ever been asked to do this?
I have a friend that always does the Relay for life and is pretty big in the cancer society, and she has never heard of it before.
Please tell me that this is really for them.

It sounds fishy to me. Probably anyone can get a list of people who have donated so just because she mentioned your previous donations doesn't mean she was actually calling for them. Also I would think that an organization like that would be using bulk mail/organization postage rates not expecting "volunteers" to buy regular stamps. I hope you found a phone number for them to verify or report this. Even though it sounds like the makings of a scam I really hope it isn't. People using such an good organization to hide a scam is horribly wrong in my eyes.

I ended up googling the phone number that called me, and it did show up as American Cancer Society. There was also several complaints about this number calling people harassing people for donations.
Once I get the supplies that I'm supposively supposed to mail out, I'm going to call the national cancer soceity headquarters and just make sure this is really legit.
Even though the number came up good, I'm still a little skeptical.

I'm still going to make sure this is really the cancer society. I'm not sure how easy it is for some company to get a number under the cancer society name, and run a scam. When ever I get the paper work that I'm supposed to mail out, I'm going ot research a bit more just to be safe. Thanks for responding!
