How much time do you spend writing?

I want to have more time to write, but I don't seem to have enough time doing that. I probably have about 2 hours per day to write. I write in total chaos with kids screaming, television on, running back and forth to the kitchen making food. At this rate, I will never be able to compete in any writing contests. How do you find time to write?

I am a free lance writer, journalist and author and the only thing I can say to you is write whenever you can...wherever you are. If you take the kids somewhere and they are playing keep a scribbler and pen and begin jotting down ideas or observations. Sitting in a doctor or dentist's office...write, write and write some more. Scheduling time with yourself either an hour before or after the children are in bed works too. Writing professionally requires dicipline and commitment. There are always reasons not to write or excuses why we can't. I learned the hard way if you want to be a paid, professional writer...you write, send out query letters to editors and you keep doing that until you begin to fullfill your dream of writing as a living. Another trick I use is to dictate ideas into a voice activated recorder. I keep it with me and if I get a great idea in the car, or after meditating I record it until I have a chance to flesh it out. I also have a large jar that I call my 'job jar.' When an idea hits I quickly jot the core of the content down and put it in my jar. Sometimes when I have writer's block I listen to the previously recorded concepts or pull something out of my ideas jar and it gives me something to begin developing.

Thank you...Thank you...You are speaking from a truth writer's "perspective". It's invaluable. All your tips and suggestions are very much appreciated. Where can I find your work to read?

Hi again...glad the tips are useful. If you want to check out some of my previously published articles you can go to my homepage: www.mts.net/~raiastar. I have a section on tips for writer's, concepts behind my writing company Perspectives On Healthy Living, my background, experience and previously published articles that are archived there. They are actual tear sheets from the magazines and papers and sometimes the pages are a little lopsided...but at least it shows new editors and readers where and when they were published. Information on the life coaching, group facilitation company (Fresh Beginnings) that my hubby and I run is there too. So check it out...if there is anything else I can do to assist you in reaching your writing goals...send me an e-mail. First we need to do a freinds request...so I will do that after posting this. Good luck...keep on writing...believe in yourself....and go for it! Best regards. Raia

If it's only about writing, then probably 2 hours everyday on mylot. I spend another half hour once a week to write on my blog (have to increase that to half hour twice a week somehow in the coming future). I write for helium too but the amount of time I spend is not stable at all. Sometimes, it would be like 1 hour every week and sometimes I would completely forget about it. I would say I write for helium only when I have some extra time. I am quite lucky because I live alone at the moment and I could write at any time I want after work. However, my problem is I have to wait till that writing mode strick me before I could start. Good luck with your writing!

Wow, 3 articles per week! Nice! I hope you could catch up with your goal! I have only planned to write 3-4 more articles for helium this month and I haven't even started. I feel kind of bad now *laughs*.

Hi IcyCucky , seeing your post I could not stop investigating your profile . I am happy to know that you at this age(49) harbours aspiration for a writing in a contest .I am 39 years and long past I stopped aspiring for any achievements . You shall be able to manage your time . Where there is will there is way . The more devoted you become to your writing tasks the less you will be detracted by the outside noise. Have a very good luck .

First, thank you for looking in my profile. I didn't think I am that old, being 49 and all. I am still kicking, writing, working, cleaning, and moving around very well. I have been writing since I know how to put letters together. Second, thank you Vladilyich for confirming that age has nothing to do with anything. Good luck with your endeavor.

Since I found myLot I am finding it hard to find time to write. It is a good thing I am involved in a writing group. At least I know I will get at least some writing in every week. Of course I journal a couple of times a week - that is writing too. Actually, I am at the editing stage which is boring and takes forever (I'm currently on my 6th edit of my novel). So that is kind of hard to get motivated to do. I think once the kids are back in school I will find more time (and stop sleeping in in the mornings!).

It is a lot of work, editing. I have spoken to several published authors and they all say it takes several edits to perfect their novels. So as boring as it is, it is necessary. *sigh*

Good luck with editing your novel. I have 2 novels that have been sitting for years because I can't bring myself to do the actual editing.

I spend about 2 to 4 hours a day. 2 hours on the days I work and 4 hours on the days I don't. I write before my husband gets up in the AM or after he goes to bed at night. So I either get up before him or go to bed after him. Contests do demand a lot of time, that's why MarketPlace at Helium, I like better. Take care

I am up at 6:30 every day to get on my computer. I read my email, check for titles on Helium that I want to write, write for a while, and by 8:30 the kids are up and I have to work. I check in MarketPlace, but not finding anything yet to write about. What did you write so far for MarketPlace?

I spend a few hours writing every day. Probably at least 4. I write here plus I write reviews for Epinions and Viewpoints and in addition to MyLot (which keeps my very busy) I also post at 3 other message boards. I just can't stop! I don't have kids and I keep my house clean on the weekends so I have lots of time for myself in which to write. And I work from home too so sometimes I write during my lunch break. Usually when I'm done with working I write for an hour or so before dinner and then another few after dinner.

That's great! I have heard of Epinions, but not Viewpoints. What do you write about on these sites?

Boy are you making me feel guilty. I am supposed to finish this novel, on my sixth draft, and yet I only have an hour to work on it. The rest of the time I am on myLot, eating, walking, housecleaning, etc. I do not have any children running around, but there is the television. I have a journal in the living room and I should be writing in it, between commercials, but do I? No way. I am too lazy to go back to the computer room and get my pen. As for Helium, the Hub, and Associated Content, I find it hard to write as I am not a non fiction writer. I usually start writing after i read my Bible, the first time I turn on the computer, because it is before my husband gets up.

Please don't feel guilty. An hour is an hour. The hard part is to keep ourselves on task. The bible inspires you? What do you write after reading the bible?

I stopped writing a long time ago, but when I did I used to spend 2 hours at least. Sometimes the test had its own life and I stopped only because I had other things to do. In other occasions I would spend hours and nothing would come out. In any case I would go to a library when I had finished my work.

We all have to go through that period sometimes in life, where we have to make choices. My English professor once said to me that my writing is my therapeutic, and I think he was right.

This is just your start similar to mine. I guess you should have patience and continue writing. Me too in a similar situation; have a kid to attend to, have to cook, manage the household chores. I am taking it patiently. I usually make time when my kid is off to school. So please have patience and continue mylotting.

Thanks for your encouraging words. Although when school starts again, I will have more running around to do, I will definitely have more time to write. I like it here on MyLot, because it's more friendly.

Practice makes perfect. So I was told. I spend time reading too. When I am busy with the kids and can't write, I read. I learn a lot from reading.

I write early in the morning, and not at night. I have to put the kid to bed and read him a story. By the time he is ready to sleep, I am out like a light too!
