Did you catch this weird news story?

I was reading a news piece yesterday about a couple in New Zealand who tried to name their baby son 4Real. The government said you can't use numbers in a name so now they are trying Superman (but they say that he'll always be 4Real at home to them). Silly as it sounds, it has created quite a stir on the aol.com news section. When I read it there was over 3600 comments posted about it! Even the commentators were arguing over the issue. Although the majority say Superman is a bad idea for a name, half of the people say parents should be able to name their child anything they want. I've long thought that common sense is being bred out of the human race but geesh! What do you guys think?

I read some of this story an i thought they were crazy. Why would anyone want to name their child a crazy name like that? Or superman.I would feel sorry for the kid have a name like that.I wonder if the parents are doing this for media attention.an for commentators arguing over.."now that takes the cake..

My youngest son Skyler Kai was christened in Denmark, and we actually had to seek approval for it as well. In Denmark there is a list of approved names, which you can choose from (which basically covers every name of every person in Denmark). If your name is not on the list you have to seek approval, and one way to get the name approved is, if it is a family name. Another way is, if the child's parent come from a different country, and the name is common there. We got our son's name approved through the last option, but we were so afraid that we would not be able to get the name approved before our son's christening, and before my husband had to go back to the U.S.

Well, that's a bit too far for governmental control, in my opinion. I could understand New Zealand with the not having numerals in a name as that makes sense but having to get approval for every name? That's a bit much. I'm glad you got it approved.

Since I grew up in a country, where this is just normal, I feel very split at this point, but it was kind of akward to have to seek approval.

Hi there. Wow, here I am living in New Zealand and had never heard of this news until now, through reading your post... I thought people should already have the right to name there babies anything they wanted, but I guess not... I dont think I would go as far as to name my child 4real or superman lol... I find it quiet funny...
