What do you think of having ornamental grass in your yard?

I just had some ornamental grass planted in my backyard called Dwarf pampas Grass today. They are supposed to grow about ten feet tall after proper care. One of my other neighbors has it as well though mine is somewhat different. Do you use ornamental grass in your front or backyard? I also planted a Butterfly Bush in my backyard as well to make my backyard nicer and to help the birds as well.

I got my bushes from the countryside nursery and garden center near me so you should be able to get it at a nursery in your area or you can check Lowes or Home Depot. You have to dig a hole a few feet deep and then put topsoil around it and then water it every couple of days til around October. After October you do not have to worry about watering it again.

That sounds so beautiful. I would if I could but I'm afraid not much of anything would grow here. Grass? I wish we had grass that was soft and felt good under your feet. We mainly have weeds and dirt. I'd love to see what a butterfly bush looks like. Does it look like a butterfly?

Here is the link to my interest section so you can see what a Butterfly Bush looks like. It is very pretty and will look nicer after it has had a chance to grow and get fed water. I just planted it yesterday. Birds and butterflies enjoy this bush.

Back when I was growing up, I never remember having anything like this in our yard. We had a nice arrangemtn of Flowers and had a wonderful Garden. Only thing I remember is from time to time planting Grass seed out on the lawn so we would have Nice Green grass in the areas that the lawn had turned brown, or no grass was at due to too much walking thru, or from the weather. If I had a yard now instead of living in a Condo we are buying I am not sure if I would have this or not. I guess it would depend on how much yard I had, etc.

My friend said it would grow but I would still be able to get in and out of my shed. It won't block it completely and my shed hardly gets used anyways. :-) I can not wait to see this fully grown.

Hi kgwat! I love ornamental grasses! I love grass! I've been known to go to the rural ditches and dig up a variety and plant it in my gardens. (shhh... don't tell the DNR about that, though!) I have no idea what some of them are even called. The way they grow and the tufts at the top just thrill me. Silly huh? Some grasses that I DO know I have.. Little Blue Stem Big Blue Stem Northern Oats FoxTail and some jointed reed grass. (I don't know that actual name of this, but we always called it "tinker Toy Grass" as we could pull the grass apart at the joints, and then put it back together again. Maybe someday I'll expand my garden to contain more commercially grown grasses. They are pretty, too!

Hi. I tend to love the kind of ornamental grass they use in "Japanese Gardens" this grass helps everything blend and look more authentic, historic and most beautiful...

It does give a nice look to a yard and look forward to seeing mine grow. My neighbors have a similar kind as well.

I plan on getting some of the tall grasses. I have had my house for almost 2 yrs. When I got it, the yard and around the house was a jungle. It has taken time to cut the jungle down and get control of it. It keeps trying to grow back. I still have stumps that need to be dug up. I do have a place in the front yard on the side that I want to have some of the tall ornamental grasses to grow. My mom has a butterfly bush, they can get real big. They are also very pretty.

I love that pampas grass! I think it really looks beautiful, especially in the fall, and when they bend with the winds. I don't have any pampas, or other ornamental grasses. I do have the butterfly bush, and hummingbird vine (trumpet vine) and other things to attract the birds and butterflies.

Thanks for adding the image of the grass...very pretty indeed!! I have some neighbors that have it, and in this cold region when fall is here, it's such a beautiful compliment to the vibrant changing colors of the tree leaves. Enjoy your gardening!

Pampas Grass - Here is my grass that has grown nicely and taking form. I water it every couple of days til October, according to my landscaping friend.
Thanks for the compliments on my grass and here is an updated picture of my grass that is growing quickly. I love this grass very much. Butterfly bushes are very nice too and have one in my yard as well.
