growin grass!

okay before i start let me tell u that i bought my house brand new, and so my backyard was dirt! well we've been at my house for 5 yrs. and never did our backyard because financially we could never afford it! so one day my uncle came to cut my weeds in the backyard and told me that just start watering my weeds everyday to loosen the dirt then one day just plant grass seeds ones that also kills weeds! then just keep watering and watering, ideally i'm supposed to rototill the ground so the grass can grow better, but i don't have a rota-tiller and i can't afford to rent one let alone use one! i barely learned to use a lawn mower! so i did that now my grass is growing, not as fast as i would want, but i could wait, i waited 5 years i know i could wait a few months! but it's been growing good, i noticed the seeds r killing a lot of the weeds and turning it into grass! has anyone else ever did it this way? or know a better way just as easy and inexpensive b/c i have a lot more area to grow grass, i just did a third of my backyard as a test!
