What if Microsoft and Macintosh merge?

Well, a student of mine raised this question in class and it got everyone to thinking of the possibility.
Personally, I don't think there's any harm if Microsoft and Macintos merge...these two companies play big parts in the development of computers so i believe that if they join forces then there will be more new technologies that will sprout from the merging.
So what's your opinion? :)

I for one think it would be terrible. Competition is what drives these companies to improve. If they were to merge, there would be no motivation to get any better. They would put out a crappy product and people would be forced to buy it. Even now competition is so weak that Microsoft released Vista, an overpriced, bloated, and buggy OS and people are buying it anyway. Without Macintosh the only other option for an OS would be Linux, and that would never work since the average person knows very little about computers and wouldn't want to learn how Linux works.

I think I agree with you on the part about Linux. I am interested to learn Linux though but I it's too complicated so I haven't done anything about it yet... LOL!
I also got your point...competition is something that must be considered in this issue since I also believe that competition also improves products though it is not the only factor...

If you ever want to try Linux, I recommend Mepis Linux from www.mepis.org. It is the easiest and most user friendly, and you can use it without even installing it on your computer. You can download it, burn it to a CD, and just run your computer off the CD without making any actual changes.
