I have some lovely neighbours and they all know my way of life, and that I love to eat from Nature's offerings. Well, to cut a long story short, there's a young couple across the road, with three children, and ok... I suppose he keeps them well supplied with food, and stuff... they seem healthy enough. lol. Well, he went fishing on Saturday and very kindly brought me half a dozen, fresh, whole mackerel. I love mackerel, but I don't know where to start with them! I normally buy my fish ready to cook. Does anybody have any idea on how to prepare them and the best way to cook them? I remember my brother used to catch them, and cook them on a bed of salt, in a skillet, so as to take some of the oil out and help flavour the fish some. So... helllllp!!! I don't know where to start and have put these fish in the fridge to keep for a while. I just want to eat some now!

Well you did say that you cut the story short so you got a short answer in reply lol. I suppose if you added more content you would have got the same response so you cant win either way. Great to have friends like you have to give you so many treats. Have a great treat from Deeeky.

We don't get a lot of catfish here, but I suppose that could be adapted to other fish. I like huss, and normally have it in batter, but my diet doesn't really allow that, so I have an alternative, here. Brightest Blessings, my friend. xx

I would skin them and debone them, then freeze them. YOu can go to www.foodnetwork.com and they have a lot of helpfull hints and even small klips that show you how to do such things. Hope this helps.

Yes, freezing is the best option as I can't do six at once! lol. I like them, but I think that would make me a bit green around the gills. Thank you for the link, my friend and Brightest Blessings.

Lovely, fresh caught fish... doesn't get any better than that! A good tutorial on filleting can be found at http://www.fishingcairns.com.au/page17-1.html it has pictures and everything. Enjoy!

I hope they have been cleaned and filleted!LOL If you have not already cooked them we prepare and cook ours in a light batter. We beat up a couple of eggs, add a little milk and whip it up. After that the fish is dipped in that combo and then rolled in whatever coating you'd prefer. Crushed bread crumbs work, so does cornmeal, Shake and Bake for fish also is tasty...although any Shake and Bake will suffice. Do you have that where you are? Once the fillets are coated they can be baked in a shallow dish with a little oil...pan fried...or even deep fried. Hope you enjoy your fish...and the fish tale in whatever way is most enjoyable for you and yours! Bounty from Nature...Sweet!

No, I haven't heard of Shake and Bake. We have Shake and Vac! ha ha ha. I'm sure there's probably something similar available though. Thank you for your input, my friend and Brightest Blessings. I've got a few things to try now, haven't I? I'm sure all of them are really tasty. :)
