Alfredo Lim, also known as Dirty Harry, is back as mayor of the Philippines' capital. Mayor Alfredo Lim was nicknamed Dirty Harry, after the character made popular by award-winning Hollywood actor Clint Eastwood in his movies, as early as his days as a distinguished police officer because of his tough, uncompromising and unyielding character which he maintained until now that he is in his late 70's. As mayor from 1992 to 1998,who would ever forget how Lim got rid of Manila's red light ditrict and how he personally spray painted homes of suspected drug pushers and users as well? When Lito Atienza took over as Manila mayor from 1998 to 2007, focus shifted from disciplining Manilans to beautifying the city. As such, Manila's decaying public facilities were improved as highlighted by the development of the sidewalk by the Manila Bay along Roxas Blvd. - Baywalk. Now that the former police officer, mayor, National Bureau of Investigation director, Department of Interior and Local Government secretary and later senator is back as mayor after winning the 2007 mayoralty race, what are Manilans to expect? As a starter, Lim formally reopened the portion of Avenida which was blocked, as ordered by Atienza, to traffic for the benefit of pedestrians. He also ordered for the demolition of business establishments within the Baywalk area developed by Atienza's administration because they serve liquors and have no business permits. Now, what's next? Isn't it such a waste of money for the city government to build and then destroy such infrastructures? What if Lim maintains his being a disciplinarian and at the same time adopt Atienza's beautification and improvement programs? Wouldn't Manilans benefit more? What do you think?
