Weather Radios

Police scanner/weather radio - A possible life saver device all should have.
Even if it's just a weather radio.

As my friends here know I had some severe storms here in Minnesota over the weekend. High winds, hail, lightening strikes and 2 inches of rain in an hours time. Now I own a police scanner/weather radio combo. But there are radios available that broadcast just the weather stations as we hear when a warning/watch is issued. It is programmable for certain areas you wish to alert you of any warnings/watches etc. This is a picture of mine sitting on the end table in my living room. The frequency it is on in this photo is the weather station for my area, 165.500. It just went off again for watches for a severe thunderstorm for Anoka County once again. I had never heard one of these before till this weekend. Now I listen to it a lot granted. But I've never left it on in alarm mode. Let me say this. I was asleep about 20 feet from the radio. I am also a very sound sleeper. well I suddenly heard this VERY loud shrill beeping sound and woke up. I had no idea what the heck this was. Then the radio started talking about the approaching storm and the warnings for my County. This is a very useleful and helpful aid in staying safe during severe weather. You can get a decent model for under $30 at most stores. I'd suggest getting one if you're in an are prone to tornados, hurricanes and other severe type weather. Just wanted to share this was all. Those could save your lives if you lived in ares of bad storms. Did you think you where having a bad dream when the radio when off the other night? Here in Central CA we have mild weather, we average 11 inches of rain a year and our winds get up to 24 miles per hour sometimes more but not a lot. We live in the city so we are pretty much safe.

I can see why you get so interested in these radios. My first husband was very into 2 way radios. He had some really popwerrful ones. He didn't have a Poloce scanner, as I think they are illegal here. But he had a lot of fun talking to people all over the World. My current hubby also has a 2 way radio. It is not so powerful. He has this huge antennae in the backyard. It is very handy for you to have advance warning of the weather.

They aren't illegal in your home. Now tyhe portables are illegal. But mine is a police scanner, weather radio, ametuer radio, and shortwave or Ham radio combined. I can hear almost anything one can talk on as well like baby monitors, cordless phones, even cell phones. I've heard a few interesting conversations to say the least. What a great idea- Although I’m sure it would drive me bonkers- as the police scanners do- There is a co-worker here at work that has one- and it drives me crazy- He is an EMT though- But I could see how they would be helpful if you lived in an area that had frequent storms- I don’t though.
