chemical burn with relaxer/straightener

Have you ever gotten a perm (relaxer/straightener) and the next day (or same day) realised that you've sustained burns on your scalp? Sometimes the hair itself is affected and clumps together and sometimes feels very coarse. Just wondering if anyone has ever had that happen and what they did or what they would recommend. My friend had hers done yesterday and isn't sure what to do about her hair, she's almost sure she will get some breakage as a result.
