Death Penalty vs. Life Without Parole

Which do you believe is a more appropriate punishment for a murderer? And why? Do you feel the purpose of the death sentence is to punish the criminal or protect society or give the vistim's loved ones a sense of retribution? I believe the punishment inflicted for grave crimes should reflect society's revulsion of said crime - so when the death penalty is outlawed, does that speak of our levels of tolerance for certain crimes? Or do we attribute it to our being "humane"?
