How do you spruce up a rental house without sinking lots of money into it that will have to be left when you move out? I plan on using annuals and many flower pots. Any other ideas? What can I do in containers? What would look good?

I have planted all kinds of stuff in planters. I use flower pots, urns, and even larger containers (there are some really nice wood ones online). I usually plant an assortment of flowers. This year, I planted an herb garden in containers. I plan to move it inside when it gets cooler and hopefully will have fresh herbs most of the year. I have planted strawberries, tomatoes, cantalopes and other fruits and veggies in containers. Just about anything can be grown in a container garden, you just have to be careful with the container size so that the plants roots will have room.

I've done that before. I usually did a mix of pansies and snapdragons and anything else that I thought was a nice color or an interesting shape.

I would recommend great big flower pots, just be sure to put them where you want them before you load them up with dirt. :) I have a couple of friends who have several large planters on their back patio, and they grow a mix of annuals and perennials in those, just pulling the annuals out at the end of the season, and planting new ones the following spring. We have a couple of window boxes on our balcony at our apartment, and I'm hoping to grow a little something in them next year. We didn't get here till late May, and I put off planting anything for too long. There are still a few things I could probably try to grow now, but I haven't found anything that I want to grow yet. :)

Annuals need lots of sunshine. Make sure that the spot your planting it is well bright with sun. Yes, it is good to have it in pots and other containers if you have plans of moving out so that you carry them with you by the time you move out.
