Keeping your keyboard probably will save you nothing and I would be worried about keeping that old of a monitor. But if that is what you want to do. If I were you I would just get a whole new computer that had XP(much better then ME) since there still seem to be some problems with Vista. Just watch for sales at Office Depot or Office Max and check out Walmart. There might even be some that come with 2 gb of memory, if not then to upgrade will be expensive but cheaper than doing it later. If there is not one that is cheap enough with a 250 harddrive, I wouldn't worry about it. As a matter of fact an external hardrive that connects by a USB port would probably be better since you can get them fairly cheap on sale and they can be moved from computer to computer. I got a 250 gb a few months ago for $80 at Office Depot, it is one that has to be plugged in to power but that made it cheaper. My current computer is a Dell that is almost 2 years old and has an 80 gb harddrive and 512 mb of memory. Dell seems to be a good computer but their technical support is terrible. Since I got the external harddrive, the only thing that I might change is the amount of memory. Also, I have an optical mouse which is much better then the old ball ones. I realize my suggestion is not really what you wanted to hear, but I think you would be better off with a new computer rather then just a new cpu.

It really depends on the model of your Gateway Computer. If you have the model number then go to gateway and go to their support page and look up your models specifications. It well tell you how much rame you can put in it and what type of ram it takes. It well also tell you what type of CPU's it can take. If it is a celeron chip then do not even bother upgrading, just buy a new computer. Also you really do not need 2gb ram because ME will not recognize it. If you are buying a new hard drive then you need a new operating system. ME is no longer being supported by micrsoft. Therefore XP is your best choice at this time. Vista is slow and still full of bugs. If using XP then 2gb ram would be very good. The other thing to consider is the graphics card. If you are doing any thing other then surfing the internet and using wordpad then you really should also upgrade your graphics card to make it workable with newer software. If you are getting a new graphics card then you might need a new power supply. Most off the shelf cpmputers sold have a very small power supply. 200-300 watts. while most graphics cards require a minimum of 350 watt power supply. This sounds like it could be a lot of work ro if you are like me a lot of fun.
