Does a leopard ever change its spots?

Something happened recently with a friend that made me come back to this age old saying & ponder about it. I've applied this saying to so many different situations and believed in it, but I find myself now questioning the very saying I believed in for so many years. So, do you think a leopard can ever change its spots? or simply mask them for a short period of time?
