What in the world does LOL mean?

For the last three years, I've just automatically assumed that LOL refers to "laugh out loud". At least that's what a friend told me awhile back. That's what it meant to her, so everytime she wrote LOL in an email, I knew she thought something was very funny so she was laughing out loud. And, it seemed that everyone agreed. From one forum to the next people were posting their LOL comments to back up their laughs. So, apparently everyone was in agreement that LOL meant "laugh out loud." But, the other day, a very spooky thought occurred to me. What if LOL doesn't really mean "laugh out loud" (or laughing out loud, if you prefer)? What if LOL stands for something more sinister like "Lots of love"? Can you imagine wishing a perfect stranger lots of love! Now it's my turn to LOL! So, what does LOL mean to you? Do you think LOL stands for "laugh out loud"? If you could change LOL to mean something else, what would it be? As for me, I think I would change it to "Lady of Leisure", that suits my lifestyle more!

I remember a net friend told me LOL means lots of laughter. I think no matter what it has a good meaning. Just like seeing the symbol of ":)".

Recently, I've started using the smiley face in my discussions to show that I am happy or laughing. :) I think it makes me seem more friendly, so that others will know I am joking. Thanks for bringing that point up.

i think its better if it remains as "laughing out loud". ^__^ almost everybody use it just like that. i dont think anyone will mistake it for something else. if ever i want to change it, i'll make it as "L----- of li lian jie". the first L would stand for my nickname and li lian jie is my idol's, jet li's mandarin name. LOL oops! i mean it as laughing out loud. ^__^

I've only thought of LOL as laughing out loud. That's the way I always see it used. Now you have me thinking. I'll have to watch to make sure that is the only context it is used in.

LOL: What to type when there's nothing to say. That and the fact that it's an acronym for 'Laugh Out Loud'. I have a tendency however to type LNL: Laugh Not Loud. I find it more realistic as I am not a loud laugher and it seems more appropriate depending on how much of a smartass I feel like being. Nadine.

Laugh out Loud or Lots of Laughing. However, I can understand confusion with acronyms. (I deal with way too many both on and offline). LOL could also stand for Lots of Love, Looking OnLine, Link or List, Like or Love. But then again, that was back in the day and up to a few years back.

In general, I think most internet users understand that in emails and chat rooms and sites like this people use LOL for "laugh out loud". I have a few friends who have just recently got into using facebook and they asked me why people dropped LOL into the middle of sentences because as far as they were aware it meant "lots of love" - it really made me chuckle as it reminded me of another incident. A few years back a colleague at work said she used to chat online and added lots of random people from chatrooms to her msn and yahoo messengers. When they used to say LOL she assumed they were being affectionate, so she always replied with a (K) or (L) which is a kiss or heart in MSN and/or the heart emote in yahoo - she didn't want to offend them by not responding to their LOL (remember she thought they were sending her love but she didn't want to send love so sent kiss or heart symbols). I roared with laughter when she told me this story as she said that she lost quite a few friends due to this as they thought she was trying to come onto them - both male and female - why did none of them think to ask her why she kept using the wrong emotes in responses to their LOLs?! I like Lade of Leisure, I wish I was one LOL!

It definitely means "laugh out loud" for most of the internet community. There may be a few people who use it to mean something else, but they would be a minority, so it wouldn't matter much to the rest of us. I've never seen anyone use it to mean anything else.

I was told that it meant "laugh outloud" and I use it in that way in emails and when chatting. I suppose it could very well be used to mean "lots of love" or "lady of leisure," but that could be a serious problem when emailing or chatting or even blogging, as you mentioned. I think everyone should stick to one abbreviation for one meaning. I'm sticking with LOL meaning "laugh outloud." :)
