Do you discuss your salary with your friends and family members?

What is your immediate response when your friend, colleague or family member asks about your gross salary? Do you tell the truth, fake it or choose not to answer because it is a sensitive issue?

Asking about salary to a man is like asking the age of a woman. I dont like people asking about salary. Its a very sensitive issue and i dont answer clearly.

My family doesn't usually ask questions like that. I think if someone did ask, I'd kind of put them off with a thing along the lines of "oh, not enough, you know?" and laugh a bit and then change the subject.

What if that person is persistent about it and ask "So how much are you getting if it's not enough for you?". I've encountered similar persistent type of question before and it annoys me so I just fake a figure in order to end the subject.

Ever since I started working,my parents ners ask me about it, but my siblings did specially those firt years but not anymore now a days.I'll probably say the truth if they do ask. For fiends and colleagues-No I will not tell them how much I am receiving..I'll just say it's personal thing.

Hi. Personally I dont think its important that family or friends should know our personal income, not that they ask questions like that...

When a friend would ask my gross salary,I would usually reply, "enough to support my basic and extra-curricular needs" with a smile. And that would be it. end of discussion. But we didn't talk much about the salary issue; it would only make us feel depressed if we would know someone has a higher salary with less workload. As for my family, they don't ask about my salary. For them, that's a very private information.

I get asked all the time. People think because I am a self employed writer that I am either rich or poor and the truth is, I am neither. I usually say I do OK for myself or that I make an average amount but work darn hard for it (which I do). If they push me and it is a family member, I will tell them an estimate (It changes). I don't think my friends need to know what I make and I would never think to ask anyone that so if they ask, I just tell them I make less than when I was with WCW (a wrestling company known for being VERY generous) but I still do OK. That's enough.

I do not tell my gross salary to anyone and if they ask, just walk away or change the subject. Giving out my gross salary leads to too much complications. For instance, when someone wants to know, they are usually just about to ask 'could you lend me some money" or "you really do not need that much," I mean why would they want to know your gross salary unless they want some of your money anyway?

Some may just wanna make comparisons on salary so they ask. Some may even want to find out the job market based on friend's salary. But to me, it's just too personal to discuss.

I usually try and avoid to answer such questions. But if I may have to answer, it depends on the person who is asking me about my salary. Like if I am close to someone I may tell the truth otherwise I will fake it.
