Train Tracks...

There is this thing people seem to do when driving over train tracks that I just can't seem to understand. It's not the whole "lifting your feet" while driving over them or holding your breath while passing a cemetary kind of thing. It's that people cross over the train tracks on the far right side. I don't get it! Why!? Is there something different about the tracks if you go over to the right then just driving down the center? I've tried both and they seem the same to me! I just don't get it. I actually hate crossing train tracks anyway because I hate that so many people stop on them! I get so freaked out if I have to stop on the tracks. I just want to get over them as fast as possible...but these people who drive over to the far right side always always seem to slow me up! This is a stupid question, but seriously... does anyone do this? or have any idea why people do this!?

Oh weird! I don't think I have ever noticed this. And I am sure I don't do it. And I would NOT be stopping on train tracks unless my car broke down right on top. I would wait for the other cars to pass so I could first. I hear way too many stories about cars getting run over while either stopping or stupidly trying to out run the train by crossing when one is coming...stupid people.

I do go slowly over them because most (around here) sit so high and are rough to go across.

Ha ha. Apparently no one does! Oh man I hate stopping on train tracks. People go over them so slow and everything that I always do that...sit and wait until the people in front of me are done going over and then I cross. I really try to avoid the tracks though, I just wanna know why people go off to the side!

That was the only reason that i could really think of: going over slowly on the appropriate side to the side of the road you drive on because of the incline that most train tracks have compared to the road. A lot of people where I live do it over the speed humps too, to avoid ruining the car's suspension or receiving too much of a jolt. Other than that, I think you're right: Everyone's just crazy! =D Mal.

I don't think I've ever paid attention to how I go over train tracks or how anyone else does. Where I live, there aren't but a few to cross and I rarely need to go over them. Ha! I'm going to have to tell someone now to randomly drive over a set so I can watch which side they drive on.:P I'll report back to you after my experiment.

)No one has ever been able to answer this question for me. I just don't get it! I'm like "Why are you people crazy!" whenever i drive over the train tracks. I don't go over them often, just sometimes a way I go into the city. Definitely let me know how your experiment goes.

In Australia, we drive on the left hand side, but yes, people still do this here. I can't say I know why, although I have noticed, but it doesn't particularly bother me to be honest. I hope that you can receive a more informative answer to help you in understanding this strange but common idiosyncrasy. Malyck

yeah i've been to australia. I guess I should have said "far right or far left depending on which side of the road you drive on". It really bugs me...because I just want to get over the tracks as fast as possible..but i end up driving next to the person in front of me because they're driving off to the side. I just don't understand the point. I doubt i'll get a good answer, but thanks :)
